Yesterday I was at the recycling center dropping off a refrigerator. After backing up to the proper bin. I got out open the tailgate and realized I can Help myself by backing up another 8 in. Went back into the cab left the door open put it in reverse tried to back up but got denied. Had to close the door just to back up a couple inches.
Another instance is when I'm cleaning the truck and applying some tire shine hop into the truck door open go to put reverse so I can get the tires that are on the ground go to back it up a half a foot denied. So coming from multiple vehicles where I never had to close the door to move the vehicle yes this is a bit of a nuisance.
Are you applying tire shine to the tire's tread? In the motorcycle community this is a big no-no as it reduces grip and could result in severe injury or death. It's probably less critical on a truck but you aren't helping traction by adding oil to your tires.

I’ve never heard of applying it to the tread. Anyone who does deserves the result, hopefully without collateral damage to innocents.

This is not a Lightning specific thing. Apparently Ford implemented this years ago on all models that have an electronic shifter. It is a safety feature. If you open the door, the vehicle will go into Park.

Keep your foot on the brake and you can shift in Drive or Reverse.

You may have to have seat belt on or release parking brake (I do not on my 2022), but you can shift out of Park with door still open (foot on brake).

See Sarah’s comment #14 in particular. She works at a large Ford dealer.

A quick Google search reveals other manufacturers do something similar.

This is probably coming from having older trucks without electronic shifter then. I know I used to back up to my boat with door open etc. it’s ok it just feels like nanny feature.

This is not the situation the OP is experiencing. It is not about auto-park shifting, he is in gear, but the parking brake auto-sets if the door is opened while in gear. It can be overridden temporarily by putting your foot on the brake pedal and pushing the parking brake lever.

I have a 2024 flash, I can drive just fine with the door open and reverse. If I had my seatbelt off it switches to park but I can then have the door open and still put it in reverse or drive… it just throws a warning on the dash that the truck is not in park.
Interesting. In my '24 Lariat the parking brake will engage the instant I open the door if I have my seat belt buckled. I didn't actually try taking the seat belt off, opening the door, having the shifter automatically move to park and then moving it back to reverse or drive. I'll try that specific sequence and report back.

Agree, but I wasn't replying to OP's weirdness.
Was trying to provide context to other posters bemoaning the electronic shifter going into Park.

Why is everyone needing to drive with their door open? I guess with 360 cam option at least I don’t see a reason, maybe without the mirror cams there’s a case to be had somehow.
Trailer, mirrors/cameras caked in mud.

Went out and checked my 25 Flash and if I open the door while in gear, it will shift to park, I can reengage in drive or reverse with the door still open and move the vehicle with door open in both directions.
