In a pinch, there is a 50kw Shell Recharge station in Bellows Falls - not too far off the highway and there is food/coffee nearby.

It seems that traveling with an EV that is reliant on CCS charging has set motoring back over 100 years. A 150 mile trip shouldn’t be only for the intrepid.
If you’re an adventurer take the Lightning. If you’re trying to reduce stress in your life take the Mazda.

Take Mazda since you have the option. When I was single, I did anything from jumping off the plane to doing 140 in 45 but now that my choices have larger impact on others, I tend to be more sensible.

Even though from this side of the screen, I really want to see how Lightning does on this trip, I still say plenty of Non sub zero times to enjoy lightning. Enjoy the waste heat and fast fill up in Mazda now and save the planet starting in a month or so.

This is so true!

My inner 25 year old adventurer that used to drive a ‘90 Dodge 1500 eager to battle blizzards is gone,
instead now the Dad in me is nervous as heck to have my wife and kid in the car as we watch the range drop in the frigid temps as we barrel up the highway,
not knowing what awaits us at the roll-of-the-dice charging station lines on a cold Friday night.

It really seems with each passing day that another EV is sold and hits the road, (some with free charging wrapped in for years) even the best EA stations are starting to feel like a “Lord of the Flies” scene of circling drivers around a precious quad station of juice.
And the smaller non EA stations around here are usually single or double chargers , and then a total flip of the coin - either you score an empty one, or you’re in for a wait, or moving on.

On a warm summer night, none of this would be that big a deal…..

But the more I think about it…
putting the family through the risk in February seems a tad much for my stomach.
(We already had to live through a trip home from VT with a frozen port door that left us un-chargeable and praying to reach the finish line ).

as much as I’d like to prove this can be done,
The Mazda seems the right move this time

if you were driving a Tesla with superchargers en route, would you feel more confident about driving an EV?

I stand with the kid.

150 miles is doable. Time the charge to 100% before departure, pre-condition. Adjust speed if need be.
This...roll the dice....monitor your speed and live a little ;)

I wouldn’t even think twice about this trip or any BEV trip if I could use the Tesla Supercharger stations. This could be why Tesla will be slow to roll out its use for the general BEV public. If you could charge at a Tesla station or any other non Tesla electric charging station across the street, which would most of us choose, even if the price was higher per kw at the Tesla station? Drive up, plug in, unplug after charge and drive away. That would be so sweet.

I guess I should add a hair dryer to my Frunk Junk list.

What is your route into NH?
Passing through South Nashua, top up at EA at the mall off RT3
There are also 50kW EVgo stations at the same mall, in case anyone else stops there. One of the EA stations has been down for quite a while and the others are very limited. The best i’ve gotten is 60kW since they put them into restricted mode.

Do you have a portable generator with a 220 plug? Just throw that in the bed and use it to charge up when you get to your destination.

Keep it in the cab during the trip. -23F in the bed, that thing may never start!

You all are freaking me out a bit. The body shop just put my truck back together since the part to fix it is on back order. I’m excited because now I can take the truck instead of the Tesla on the 350 mile road trip this weekend for skiing in Vermont. We could fit all of our skis and boots and luggage in the Tesla, but with four of us it was going to be a little tight. Now that the truck is back I was excited to have more room, but all the doom and gloom is killing my buzz.
I’ll let you all know how it works out. If you don’t hear back from me by Tuesday, just look for the four human popsicles wrapped in Iced Blue Lightning at a non-functional EA station somewhere between PA and VT. I know that doesn’t really narrow the search area, does it?😉
