My 2022 Lariat ER has been trying to download software updates for a month and failing. the messages just say the update failed due to another activity blocking it. nomidea what that activity is. Last night I needed to get something out of it and I could hear my “charger” clicking on and then clicking off about every 15 seconds. It wasn’t my approaching with my phone which will initiate the charge on click this was click on (20 seconds) click off (20 seconds) over And over. I decided to unplug it for the night at 65% (usually charge to 85%). Anyone have experience with getting the software update to go through after so many failed attempts? Could the charging on and off behavior be what interrupts the update? Thanks.

Charge your 12v battery, then try again.

Failed updates have been a common problem and there are dozens of threads on this. Go into Settings..Software Updates and note the update it's trying to install. Then go to the dedicated thread for that update on this forum and you can read if failed updates were an issue with that update.

I have had many updates fail and every time I had someone check the reason it was low 12V battery voltage. Did you have the BMS replaced?

I went through this for a long time. Seems to have resolved itself, but no clear answer as to what the cause or solution was. Service techs and a couple support techs/ engineers at Ford are stumped. They're seeing it with a handful of trucks but have not pinpointed any specific cause. For over 8 months I could not install any update, 12V LVB charged up, even replaced, BMS reset, etc.. nothing helped. Dealership couldn't even install the updates directly. Then just one day a re-try of 6.2 worked and it's been fine ever since. Same error message "update failed due to another process".

Our hope was that the low volt battery BMS sensor recall (CSP) would resolve the issue, but the issue resolved before that recall could be performed. I finally had that module replaced about 10 days ago. The old BMS sensor could have been a cause or the cause, but no way to know.

Having the 12V LVB charged up is the best way to help ensure that an update will install, but it's not a guarantee that it will.

Thanks for weighing in. I just went down and put the 12V charger on it. if It’s this simple, I’m both relieved and annoyed. I’ll leave it as usual overnight and hopefully have new software in the morning.

Turn lights off, set parking brake and lock the doors. Make sure your keys and paak are far away as to not wake the truck.

There shouldn't be any 12v issues if you've had the bms replaced.

Your charger clicking is a charger thing, turn the breaker to it off for 5 minutes then back on, it has most likely lost connection. This can happen when you get power outages.

I just went through this with no help from the dealer. Unfortunately, many dealers are still not very educated on the lightning.

After 3 visits, I called Ford's customer support directly and reached a lady that was very knowledgeable. You must follow the process the user "Hellian" laid out above.

"Turn lights off, set parking brake and lock the doors. Make sure your keys and paak are far away as to not wake the truck."

Note: there's a recall on the modem and that affects OTA's! Make sure you turn the headlight switch off!

However, what I learned from the support tech was that there is no rhyme or reasons to the software releases. They might happen over a couple of days or once in a month. So your error message will stay there until a new update is released. It does not mean its failing every night. My understanding is each new update incorporates past updates so you should catch up fairly quickly once it takes.

I waited three weeks for an update to take (or be released), following the process above and making sure my 12v was charged up. Three weeks later I had received an update and it fixed several issues. Now I have tried making the above process a habit so I can ensure any updates will take. I've gotten a couple of OTAs since but they hit randomly and I never get a notification on my app despite my settings.

When will Ford fix this problem (such a widespread issue)? My Tesla would keep trying the update until it took. I never had to worry about a procedure. Just needed to be on wifi with a good charge. I love my Lightning but wonder what the software engineers were drinking (or smoking) when they came up with all these steps for updates...d

Not true, the different updates address different systems / modules.

Thanks all but still no go…..battery was low on volts so topped That up, failed. Just turned off the light (versus leave in auto) and trying again. I don’t lock it At home so maybe that’s the issues, it’s locked now.

I have received almost every update and a few had lots of failures before success. Not once did locking car, setting brake, turn off lights ensure success. I do make sure key fob and PAAK are not in range.

The only thing that helped was making sure 12v was charged. And the easiest way to do that seemed to be putting the truck on my home charger, charge at a lower rate, so that when update was scheduled at 1 am, the truck was still charging and had been for several hours.

When truck is actively charging the HVB, the 12v is also getting juice. And it may take several hours to get the 12V to a point the update won’t fail.

That’s my experience but as they say, YMMV.

Failed again. wife and I have a 12 day cruise next week and the truck will be plugged in and closer to our home wi-fi. Hopefully the update will happen by time we return.
