I’m in the RTA district for Sound Transit and the lightning is heavy enough to avoid paying it. With our MSRP, that’s a savings of several thousand over 10 years.
Wait, so a heavier vehicle gets less tax? That seems pretty odd since usually a heavier vehicle is causing more wear on the roads. 🤷‍♂️

Looks like Washington state is really getting after it! Well, I’m way less annoyed at the State of Colorado considering the amount other states are taxing EVs.

$100 too much on my Natural Gas State, they despise EVs here, surprised it’s not more.

Need to bring back the $100 safety inspection on vehicle safety.

Cars driving around with no windshields, hoods, fenders and at times three tires in some areas!

Exaggerated joke, but serious!!

In Tennessee we are hit with $200 fee to register an EV and $100 for hybrids as a way to pay into the “gas tax”

$200.00 in Ohio. I am getting commercial truck plates so that add $140. $340 for registration. That subtracts from my kw/mi.

Vermont is $500 for the Lightning because of weight and $100 EV surcharge plus $60 annual inspection. A total ripoff considering I drive about 50 miles a week. Fees should be based on miles driven, not on theoretical usage

Texas charges $200. I just got mine renewed this month. Its nice not having to take the truck in for inspection, but ICE vehicles don’t have to do that anymore either in Texas. Just some counties still require emissions testing.
Yeah the annoying part too is they still charge us sales tax when charging at home or supercharging…. I’m fine with paying my fair share but this is not!

Am curious to so see if we still have to go for the emissions test, I wouldn’t be surprised if we still had to!

Not sure what part of VT you’re in, but I split my time growing up in Derby, and like 40% of the roads are dirt. $600 is heinous. I also thought VT got rid of inspections, but glad they didn’t. However, I pay $19 in WV for a 2-year inspection. VT is really good at taxing its residents.

WV here - $200 surcharge per year for an EV. I don’t have the math in front of me but I think the back of napkin math came out to the equivalent of 12-13,000 miles per year if it were an ICE 150 at WV state fuel tax rates for 2024. Reasonable? I suppose. It’s the personal property tax assessed annually which kills me.

I wont have to actually re-do the inspection/registration on mine until 2029, but I'm hoping DE will overlook these fees.

Federal taxes are 18.4 cents a gallon for gas 24.4 cents for diesel and Texas adds $.20 a gallon for either. Texas $200 registration fee for EV’s equals about 521 gallons of gas if you include both state and federal tax, 450 gallons of diesel. If you just include the $.20 state portion of the fuel taxes then it is 1000 gallons. I think most of the states have just decided to earn some extra money when it comes to EV‘s. Because that is probably twice what it should be!

Correct. Any truck over 6000 pounds doesn’t pay it. A car over 6000 does. It was written to exclude people who use their super duty sized trucks for work since those are typically much more expensive than a car.
