Haven't been able to use my Frunk for almost a month, like many other issues I've read on here, no parts available. The Frunk is actually one of my most used parts of the truck and getting very frustrated. I get asked all the time how I like this truck and up until a month ago I was like a free advertisement for these vehicles. Getting updates from the dealer requires me to reach out to them as I never hear anything about it. Took a week to get an appointment to have it looked at then another 3 weeks so far with no working Frunk, at least I was able to manually release it to get my Costco haul out of it after it stopped working. Just hoping for some positive word that I might have a fully functioning truck again soon.

So I actually had my trunk fail pretty early on (I have a 2022) and I posted about it in one of the early trunk malfunction threads on here.

When I brought it to my dealer, they said it was going to need a new module and that it would take several weeks to get. So I resigned myself to not having a functional trunk for several weeks. But then, I was convinced there was more to this than just a bad module, so I embarked on my own diagnostic journey.

I started with the basics 12V reset. I disconnected the 12V battery (both positive and negative terminals) and then took the cables and connected them to each other with a resistor wire for about an hour to drain all the capacitors and truly reset any volatile memory. While this can be good for sorting out a lot of electronic gremlins, this did nothing.

So next I wanted to see if I could hear anything happening when I commanded the trunk to close or open. With the hood open (and this might be more difficult if you haven't disabled your trunk beeper), I listened and I could hear the same relay clicks as I would hear before when the trunk was working, except it seemed that they were clicking multiple times, almost as if they were attempting to wake up or command an actuator or module to work, but it wasn't "waking up" or activating.

So although I was getting discouraged that this might have truly been a failed module, I figured I didn't have anything to lose, still having several weeks to wait, so I pressed on. Then I remembered how the trunk if left open for longer than about 30 minutes would sometimes "forget" it's position and refuse to function, requiring a manual cycle and close to function again. Although that had obviously not worked here, I wondered if the system was sort of in a deeper "lost" state. Below is a quote from my post:

"I remembered reading something about the emergency trunk release button in the trunk being pushed and then requiring a full manual cycle and push close to reset the system. So I gave it a shot.

I closed the hood as far down as I could while still being able to reach the button from the outside, I pushed the button. The rapid alternating chime could be heard from the cab. I then manually opened the hood all the way and then closed the trunk completely and pushed down firmly to latch it. It still didn't function. But then I pulled the manual release again and cycled it fully open.

And then something crazy happened: when I pushed the button on the hood the trunk began closing. It's been working ever since."

So while it definitely could be a failed trunk module, maybe give some of the things I tried, a shot and see if it saves you the hassle of a dealership service visit!

I second Ctuan13.
  1. Manually open the Frunk all the way.
  2. Press and hold the button on the Frunk until it beeps
  3. Close it gently to see if the latch takes it. If not, close it firmly then try the button again.
This should fully reset the module, actuator, and latch. You have to do all the steps to fully reset. If this doesn't solve it, then you probably need to hurry up and wait for the new module.

I got my truck delivered in October and rarely use the frunk (probably one or two times). Recently I find it can only open a few inches by using any methods. I tried the trick mentioned above and does not work. Dealer appointment is scheduled after New Year. We don't have rain last month so I don't believe it is a water problem.

Can you lift it open manually from a partially open state?

My frunk works fine with the fob, dash button and PAAK. Front grille button does nothing. I assume it's a bad switch; waiting on the dealer to diagnose/replace.

Going in for that and a few recall items next week - love the new pick up/drop off service!

1st attempt, manual open used the emergency escape button, slow close, let it latch and is working like a charm now. Thank you all so much.

That button only seems to function if all four doors are unlocked.

Had a problem with mine, put it in drive before it closed fully. Dealer diagnostics said new module and needed to order. Went home and did the emerg release and manually opened fully, hit the button and it closed. Worked fine since.

Locked, unlocked, open, windows down, tailgate open- nothing makes it work
Just had the dealer drop the truck off - new front Frunk button, including the wiring harness for it (broken connector or some such), so a little spendy but it works like a charm. Dealer did all the outstanding recall stuff, picked up and dropped off.
