2024 Ford Lightning Flash
Brand new lightning owner (4 weeks) and first EV. I recently took a road trip and charged on a few public networks. I have found bits and pieces of this in the forum. Apologize for what most likely is repeat. Also apologize if my post or format is annoying, any suggestions on how to make it more digestible are welcome.

I have a cost question. I charged twice at the same supercharger location at roughly the same time and for roughly the same amount. One time it went through the ford app and once through the Tesla app. See screen shots

1) it seems from what I read that charging on the ford app is more expensive, but $20 more seems a bit much. Can I find an actual invoice like is shown on the Tesla app? So I know what I was actually charged per kw/h

2) how do I know when Iā€™m using the ford app vs the charger company app? Meaning, one time it just charged through ford without me selecting any thing and the other time I had to do it through the Tesla app

overall I am enjoying the truck. Definitely a lifestyle change. But Iā€™d like to have do better visibility on what Iā€™m being charged

Most apps will charge your card, or create a balance for you to draw from. Tesla seems to like $20. I went to check out the Rove complex in Santa Ana for a few minutes. THEY took $60. Chargepoint may be $20 as well.

From those numbers charging in the Tesla app was the marked $.59 per kwh. Running the math and $32 for the 50kw charge would be $.65 per kwh, not unreasonable.

When using Plug & Charge via the Blue Oval Charge Network, you will receive an EMAIL invoice of the details.

The Tesla app has it's own integrated tracking history with details if you activate the terminal with the Tesla app and pay directly to tesla.

Don't confuse the FordPass charging history records, the KWH values are net to the traction battery, they don't always line up precisely with what is invoiced by Tesla & Fordpass BOCN

Did you have multiple activations on that visit, that day? Distinct records of 2 or more?

Haha no worries, weā€™ve all been there! I would recommend if you are going on a road trip to sign up for the membership pricing plan on the Tesla app ($12.99/month) if you plan to charge more than approximately 100kwh. You save like 25% off the non-member rate and thereā€™s no commitment so you can cancel anytime. Also, I keep my plug and charge turned off so donā€™t run the risk of it starting to charge using plug and charge before I start it in the Tesla app.

Weird. The Ford screen shows 46 kwh added, yet the Tesla app only shows 16.15 kwh billed. Looking at the date and time on each app, they are the same?

.59 cents a kwh is not that bad. I pay .27 with taxes on average at home. LA, Calif.

Don't question a gift. Maybe Tesla wants to sell you a CT. And it was just a tease.

If you do take more road trips price the Tesla Membership. For me an a few others the cost was made back in one large charging session.

If you do purchase the membership do NOT use plug and charge, best even to disable it. Make sure to enable the charger in the Tesla app before plugging in.

With all my miles, and 1/2 of those while towing, I never really pay attention much to 'cost', since it's likely many times you have little control over where you can/need to stop to charge along the route.

Although, I've found that Tesla Superchargers have come out on the lower side, comparatively.

I don't use the Tesla APP, or have an account, either. I just Plug-N-Charge. Ford sends me the email 'bill', and charges my preferred payment credit card within my BlueOval account. It does the same at EA.
I use the Ford pass APP at ChargePoint and EVgo, or from the truck's Charge APP, which will bill the BlueOval account and send an email receipt. If I use the Chargepoint app, though, it is billed thru your Chargepoint account, or your credit card if as a 'guest', without an account.
Other providers may require THEIR app, or even a swipe of your card at the unit, etc.

What some new owners have found is that Plug-N-Charge will take over the initial ACTIVATION and bypass any 'app' you might want to use, such as Tesla, or EA, to get a specific membership pricing. In those situations, such as when I use my KIA EV9 1,000kwh 'Free' charging at EA, I have to Activate the unit FROM the EA app, first, BEFORE plugging in.

I have the EA app, for 'just in case' I need it, and to use my KIA EV9 'Free' kwh, until they run out. Otherwise, I just plug in.

I have the CHARGEPOINT app, just in case. Otherwise, I use my FordPassAPP to initiate the charge.

Other providers can be the wild west, unless you find them in the BlueOval account/app.

I would always recommend leaving Plug & Charge enabled, as disabling Plug & Charge prevents use of the Public Charging app on the touchscreen as well. Leave Plug & Charge enabled, but activate in the app first if you wish to bypass it.

I personally do not find the Tesla Membership to be worth it, plus the risk of forgetting to cancel it (how most subscriptions make their money).
