a few months ago, i noticed after plugging in my truck, a charge fault was noted on ford pass. I went out to garage, and my level 2 48 amp charger was not charging the truck. charge light was orange. I unplugged and plugged again, then worked fine.

Same thing happened last night after rain and using my pro power outside during the rain. This time, however, the charge tried twice and failed, then truck wouldn't attempt to charge any more. Solid orange light. I used my scanner to delete all codes, and then lowered charge rate to 32 amp, then it charged fine.

charger was trying to initiate 3x, then failing. Ive checked connections and plugs, all good and no heat during charge. Truck issue or charger you think?

Ive got 60k trouble free miles so far on my lightning.

Try another charger if resetting your charge location doesn't fix the problem.

I've had this problem with my charger, but not with my truck. One of my chargers will do this when it is cold, but if I use my mobile charger it works perfectly fine

I've had this happen a few times in the last 18 months. In most cases, I've reset the EVSE to clear it's brains (breaker off-on or unplug re-plug). That usually solves it. It was likely the communication module on the EVSE was hung up.

Try cleaning your contact socket/pins on the truck and the EVSE cable with a good electrical contact cleaner. Sometimes it is a communication error due to dirty contacts. After 60k, this maybe should be done anyway.

If the above doesn't work and the truck won't L2 charge on any EVSE (orange ring of death), you can judiciously do a full 12V reset to clear the onboard charger brains after you've waited sufficiently long enough to know there are no updates in progress.

I've only done this twice in 18 months. The first time, it wouldn't charge on any charger and after a full day, I knew there were no updates in progress. It turned out to be a failed onboard charger and the 12v reset didn't work. The second time was just this week. Again it wouldn't charge on any EVSE so after 24 hours (to make sure no updates were in progress) I did the 12v reset and was able to charge again. I don't recommend this unless it won't charge on any L2 EVSE and you give it a good amount of time (24 hours in my case) to make sure if there is an update in progress, it has a chance to finish.

I just experienced a similar problem on my home charger. I was charging overnight and when I woke up, I saw an error in FordPass saying the charger stopped charging. Luckily it charged close to my 85% default setting. I tried unplugging and plugging the charger and I’m getting the orange ring of death. I am now resetting my charger and hoping that that fixes the problem. Next step will be to try a public charger.

How do you do the 12 V reset?

Remove the negative terminal from the 12v battery, leave off for 5 minutes, reattach, you may need to manually close the Frunk and test first opening with the cabin button near the steering wheel.

Well, I reset the charger and clean the contacts. The charger looks to be working normally. It’s a Ford charger.

I still get the Orange ring of death. Next step is to try a different charger and call the dealer. Dealer has been pretty helpful although I will probably be without the car for a period of time.

At least I still have an 80% charge

Well I tried disconnecting the battery and then plugging it back in. When I plug the charger in it it was charging normally, but five minutes in it failed, and I got the orange ring of death again.

I’ll try another charger in the neighborhood and I made an appointment with Dealer for tomorrow morning. I love this truck, but it’s death by a thousand cuts.

Update. I took the truck into The dealer, they initially were afraid it was going to be a major part requiring removal of the battery. They gave me a loaner, which was very helpful.

The next day they called and said we were able to fix without any parts because it was part of a service bulletin update. I was able to pick up next day and charging is working again.

Unfortunately, I’m having an issue now setting the Max Charge. It defaults to 100% which I don’t want on a regular basis.

Remove the old charging schemes from Ford Pass or the truck Sync screen, (they synchronize).

Build a new scheme from scratch on the Sync screen while plugged in and charging.

I deleted the charging location (my house) and now it won’t let me add a new one.

Take the truck for a quick drive around the block, the GPS coordinates need to be disturbed to create a new location, also if you see a GPS coordinate for the location description, leave it alone and continue with SOC & time limit factors, save, it .... then edit it to a friendly name {HOME} or {HOME2}
