Hey guys, so I got the email this afternoon to order my ‘23MY Lightning. I went to the dealer today and spoke with my salesperson. The deposit required is only $1k and they would sell it to me for MSRP.

Issue is, I just don’t want the truck anymore. I have a Defender 130 coming in December, scheduled to be built on the 28th (Next Friday). I will be ordering a Super Duty for my mother on the 27th (Next Thursday). I reserved the Lightning on 11/24/2021 and just don’t want the thing anymore.

So what’s my best course of action? I’d like to decide tomorrow, after my dealer gets back to me with some finalized info.

I can just cancel the reservation without submitting my order tomorrow and get my $100, that’s the obvious. My salesperson said they aren’t allowed to sell to me over MSRP, according to Ford, but can’t I buy the truck and then sell it back to them so they can sell it over MSRP? They said not likely, cuz they’d buy it back at msrp (so I’d just lose out like over $5k in taxes). Would other dealers do that and/or can I switch dealers who might at this point in time? I get new selling over MSRP isn’t allowed but at that point it’s used if I buy it. Or can I sell my allocation to someone who would actually like a Lightning like someone in line at my dealer or one of you guys? It’s such a hot vehicle now, seems like just a waste to get rid of the reservation right when it’s most valuable.

I dunno what to do, lemme know your guy’s thoughts. Am I the d*ck? Haha. Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Cancel and move down the road. You're paying '23 prices now so I doubt you'll make anything flipping (I do consider that a d*ck move btw, but that's me :)). If you want/believe in karma, you cancel and that opens up a slot for someone else to get it at MSRP. But you already live a charmed life getting invited 6 months after reservations opened while there are still thousands of day 2 reservation holders waiting for that invite.

Just cancel it if you don't want it... Let someone build their own truck at MSRP smdh

Cancel your order.

You will lost time and money if you try to play games to make a quick buck. By the time your truck arrives the Lariat resell market will be softer.

If you are sure you don't want it, its not worth risking 1100$ (thats non refundable).
If you don't care much about 1100$, Order it and play with the timeline(who knows)

Well legally in Ohio, the deposit on a vehicle has to be refundable. So that’s not the issue at hand really.

Assuming you have price protection for 2022 prices, I would suggest you order the least expensive model available with decent options and flip it. If you aren’t price protected I’d walk. Chances are another dealership would give you over MSRP in trade and you’d get your sales tax back.

Anyone just getting invited now is NOT price protected. That ended with 2023 wave 2 invites.

If you want to "give" the dealer your lightning for some odd reason, order it and don't complete the purchase. It'll be counted as "abandoned" and the dealer gets the vehicle, if the deposit turns out to be non refundable for whatever reason then just make a deal on the Superduty that they give you $1,100 off.

All that being said - the fair thing to everyone else who've patiently waited since day one would be to simply decline to order and let the next person in line order theirs.

I didn't give me access to order today, Ford did. I wasn't expecting to order until late next year regardless. So you can blame Ford's shi**y ordering for that.

I'm confused ?

You asked:
but can’t I buy the truck and then sell it back to them so they can sell it over MSRP?
And all I said was that if you order it online, the dealer will then accept the order, when time comes to complete the purchase (once the truck is delivered to the dealer) you go "nah, don't want it" and the dealer keeps the truck. - That way they can sell it for whatever price they want.
Granted, you won't make any money that way (if that was your goal) but it is a solution to the "problem".

My response was to your 2nd paragraph, I understood the 1st one, that's an option for sure, it's just a matter of what makes the most sense.
