  • To determine if your F-150 Lightning has an LFP battery, you can check the 8th digit of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If the 8th digit is a 4 or 5, the battery is LFP.

    this is how I found out

That is interesting. I did not know LFP was planned for 2024 ER models yet.

My 8th digit is a 7 so I should have an ER battery, and the fact that I’ve put over 100 kWh on a charge before supports that.

I do wonder if Ford uses different motors for SR and ER trucks or if they just control the output via software. I had kinda wondered if mine was just tuned differently than my old one or something.

Sport mode is more punchy than normal but it still feels like I need to give it more pedal than the old truck did. 🤷‍♂️

My 2024 Lariat will chirp the tires if I gun it off the line in normal mode. How much punchier were the 2023's??
My 2023 Pro will screech the wheels and throw all the blood into the back of my head, like in Space Balls: "ludicrous" speed.

The ER is heavier due to the larger battery by about 500 lbs according to some reports.

But the "targeted peak torque" is supposedly the same for the two models, per Ford:

"Tagerted Peak Torque 775 ft-lbs (Calculated via peak performance of the electric motors at peak battery power. Your results may vary. Horsepower and torque are independent attributes and may not be achieved simultaneously)."

Torque at the wheels, and weight are the primary factors in acceleration for any vehicle. (In an EV the torque at the motor is the torque at the wheels assuming no transmission/gearing, and the maximum torque - Peak Torque - is instantly available at 0 RPM).

Force = Mass x Acceleration.
So A = F/M - meaning the greater the mass for a given force, the lower the acceleration.

HP is torque x RPMs, so the targeted peak HP for the ER is higher based on higher RPMs at some point, achieved through programming.

So one would think that the SR battery Lightning would accelerate faster from a stop since it is lighter and has the same torque as the ER Lightning.

However, we are driving computer controlled electric motors, so programming can change the available toque curve and affect the acceleration. Essentially the programming changes how the accelerator pedal, and vehicle speed, affects the motor voltage and current.

Interesting fact: even the slowest EVs out-accelerated 43% of ICE 'performance' cars in one test.
