That stinks. The main appeal for me on an EV is charging at home. Without it I would be hard pressed to buy an EV again.
I'm still happy to not be paying the rates of diesel fuel these days, home charging is still a lot less costly, but in Mass we have the advantage of regulation that charging is tolled by the minute, the faster the rate of charge the more cost efficient, as an EA member 24 cents a minute is a bargain, Thanksgiving session with 79kWh of energy $10 tax included is 12.7 c/kwh!

This trip would have cost me nearly $50 in my former truck, if I had to charge the Lightning at home, it would have cost only around $21

My last electric bill was $193 total paid with all taxes and fees and that was for 1250kwh. So about $0.156/kwh. Utility is supposed to come and swap my meter so they start us on a "time of use" plan.

Yeah, i’m glad i get charging at work. I wouldn’t want to be DC charging all the time. I’d probably just suck it up and pay the 0.41/kwh and charge at home but then there’s really no savings over gas. Although, i bought the truck because EVs are great to drive and i wanted a truck. The operating cost savings are a bonus. I’ll do solar next year, as well, and that will help offset some costs.

If your utility has a “time of use” it’s 100% the way to go. My rate from 10 PM to 7 AM and on weekends for $0.06 / kw. Saved me about $40 last month vs the flat $0.11 rate and I didn’t even have the truck or my level 2 charger part of the month.

Yep that’s the plan. Just waiting on the utility to change the meter. Between 11pm and 7am the rate drops to about $0.076 from $0.127. After fees and taxes those rates are a few cents higher each.

As a side benefit, In summer with a good smart thermostat and scheduling effort, and if no one is home during peak AC time you can have major savings on time of use as well.

Our electric is not as bad as the rest of New England. We pay 0.525 per day plus a few dollars per month misc fees, plus 0.1913 per kwh. Our EV charging from 2100 through 1300 weekdays and all day weekend is 0.1482 per kWh. We just installed solar panels and have net metering, so this winter we will be paying, but next year we will bank net metering credits to use through the winter our credits expire one year after generated. I have been using around 60 kWh per week and have a free level 2 charge station about 2km from work that I can plug in to once per week, so my charging cost have gone down versus my phev.

I was able to find an aggregate plan for my town. It’s through constellation. 10.5 cents kWh. I’ll have to wait a month or two before it starts. But that’s a great rate. Very lucky to have that in our town.

for others check out constellation website and see if they are in your area, single homeowner rate is around 17 cents.

Glad you found it, does your aggregation plan expire 12/31/2023?
Ours does, so it will be interesting to see what the following contract has for 2024+++

Even the 7 kW Chrgepoint chargers installed around town are cheaper than my home electricity. They’re only $0.18/kWh.

Have you ever considered solar? I found even in cloudy and snowy NY my payback was only 7yrs due to generous federal and state tax incentives.

It’s crossed my mind. Our house does face south but only the garage has a decent amount of roof facing that direction and that isn’t block by trees. It’s a very wooded area.

I'm getting decent production from an East/West roof. I calculate about a 20% loss vs. due south. When I installed they had generous tax incentives and good net metering plan..payback is on track to be ~8yrs. Since the design life is ~25yrs (the solar panels have a 25yr production guarantee) 17yrs of "free" energy was a no brainer.
