Hi all,

I had a Chevy Bolt and am getting a F150 lightning XLT in a few weeks. I was wondering if the charger cable (OME level 1 charging cable came with the car) is interchangeable so I don't have to spend $500 to buy a Ford charger. TIA

It should be but Iā€™d recommend having a level 2. Level 1 on these trucks take a loooong time to charge. Iā€™d also recommend d you save your money and get a non-ford one. Save the money. The ford one isnā€™t terrible bit not worth $500.

Thank you for your response. Which level 2 home charger do you recommend? I heard the electricians need to set it up first...

I wouldn't buy the Ford Mobile either (mine came with the truck). For one thing it's expensive at $500. Another is you can't adjust the current flow (It runs at 32 amps or so on 220V). If you want to run it in the dryer port you'll most likely be over powering the circuit. Mine consistently "complains" it's overheating in 220V mode (orange light issue but still charges though). As @flyin525 mentioned it will take a loooong time to charge on 110V; however, I've recently started leaving mine connected at 110V because for now that plug is more convenient for me. The truck isn't a daily drive so in time it will get to 80% (normal recommended max charge). So, the Bolt charger will work. Look into something like the link below (check reviews though and elsewhere in this forum). You will want it because some locations like my state park have 220V available for charging.

I did my own electrical work but donā€™t do that if you donā€™t know what youā€™re doing.

I have both the FCSP (80 amp) and the mobile charger. I have a ā€˜22 so they came with the truck. I got a cheap one on Amazon for times when I need to use a dryer plug - 24 Amp - (when I go to a Airbnb usually) for well under the $500 you can get one that does 12 amp for level 1, 24, 32, and 40 amp. If I didnā€™t have one already this is the one Iā€™d buy:

J+ Level 2 EV Charger - 21ft Length, NEMA 5-15 & 14-50, ETL Certified, 40 Amp, 9.6kW, 240V EVSE -7X Faster Portable Electric Vehicle Charger for All EV's J1772 & Tesla, IP67 (Incl Case & Wall Mount) https://a.co/d/iM740Ks

Iā€™m trying to ditch the Ford mobile charger I ordered and plan to get one of these on TaxmanHogā€™s recommendation:

What Flyin said. I bought a Tesla Mobile Connecter and a TeslaTap adapter. Iā€™d recommend the 80 amp TeslaTap if you have an ER. Both combined were about the price of the Ford Mobile Charger, maybe a little more. But then you have the benefit of using Tesla destination chargers with the TeslaTap.

I used this setup for two weeks before I had an electrician (found on Teslas website) install a Tesla Wall Connector, which I also use the TeslaTap adapter with. I only drive about 10 miles a day but having the faster level 2 charging was so worth it.

Emporia. It's the most robust $400 EVSE out there. Go to their store, put it in your cart, then abandon it. If you're lucky you'll get a additional 5% off coupon in your inbox withing 48 hours encouraging you to complete the purpose.

The app is very functional and it integrates with their whole home energy monitoring system if your interested in things like that.

Installation was very easy. They designed the handle holster and the bottom of the unit so a 3/4" PVC conduit will shoot perfectly vertical into the hole left when you remove the 14-50 plug.

Yes, nothing special about it...

The Ford mobile charger, with 240v L2 plug, can't even be adjusted from the 30amp/32amp draw down to 24amps to use at camp/RV and other places that may not have a 50amp outlet - it comes with both a 120v/15amp and a 240v/50amp plug, the latter can be used for 30-32amp charging on a 50amp outlet, which may be few and far between out there in the public space.

The spec says 32amp continuous draw - on 240v L2 circuit - EVSE's are considered continuous loads (run for more than 3 hours) so the circuit has to be derated - for 32amps that means a 40 amp capable circuit minimum to avoid wire overheating.

Other people have bought different mobile Level 1/2 chargers for just that reason, that are also much less expensive, that can be used more redily at RV/camp grounds.

But like other people will tell you, Level 1 is very very slow charging. Only good for emergencies really unless you've got a lot of time on your hands.

My 2012 Leaf came with a mobile Level 1 EVSE, and there was a company that modified it so it could draw more juice (L2), but they no longer exist I think.

Another vote for the Emporia. The "excess solar" feature is the killer function if you have TOU metering.

Sounds amazing... where can I learn all these vocabs like TOU and excess solar? Not being sarcastic, just really new into EV.

It might also be worth checking with your power company if they have any EV related programs.

Here (Michigan) DTE has several different programs, ranging from "fixed" installation costs, having the ability to pay for the installation through your utility bill, $500 credit for some chargers, different rates if you get a 2nd meter, discounts if you sign up for their ToU rates (time of use, different rates for different times during the year / day) etc.
