What do passengers think of 1PD? As a driver, you know that you're about to slow down suddenly and have your hands braced on the steering wheel. Passengers don't usually know that a slow down is imminent and don't have their hands braced on anything. I have not rode as a passenger in an EV with 1PD, so I don't know what their experience is like, but I imagine it's jarring.

I’ve been 1 pedal driving since I took delivery of the lightning in November. A software update disabled 1 pedal driving in mid December and I had a hard time adjusting to using the brakes until I could reenable it.

If you're doing it right, there doesn't have to be any sudden slowdowns. 1PD requires much more finesse -- it's not a lift your foot and coast sort of thing. And you only have to lift your foot or back off significantly if you want to quickly slow down. The dash cluster display has a small indicator for your power consumption above/below the neutral point. There's also a brake coach that gives feedback on how well you recover energy on 1PD.

Riding in an EV where the driver constantly does sudden slow-downs or jerky start/ stops due to the regenerative braking/ 1PD, just tells me they haven't figured out what they're doing.

For the first few weeks, I drove in a traditional 2 pedal setup. I then figured I would try the one pedal setting. It took a few days to get the feeling down but love it. In fact, it was switched off yesterday and I hated the 2 pedal setup and switched back immediately.

If you're just taking your foot off the pedal you're going to have some unhappy passengers and not the way I believe it was intended, although it will work. You really have to feather off of the accelerator. You've got to become the conductor. Stop or slow down without throwing your passengers out of their seats.

And this is why I feel like 1PD isn't significantly different than 2PD. You either come quickly off the gas and then feather the brake to control your braking speed or you do the same feathering as you come off the gas. Since I have 25+ years of managing that vehicle control through the brake, I prefer to stick with what I know instead of learning to do the same thing via the gas pedal. With the blended braking system, I fail to see the advantage of 1PD. It's just a different way to accomplish the same thing that requires just as much precision and practice.

There are indeed advantages to using 1PD. First of all it makes the most use of regenerative braking and the "blended" brakes only kick in at certain times -- usually when hauling a load and the truck isn't slowing at the intended rate. While 1PD / regenerative braking recovers some energy, it also uses your brakes quite a bit less and extends the life of brake pads and rotors.

All those advantages are almost identical with Ford's 2PD blended braking system.

Picked up my Lightning on Thursday (1/19) and I wasn't expecting to enjoy using one pedal by any means. I've seen a lot of post here saying to give it a shot, so I did... I flipped the toggle on and tested it in rush hour to try a get a feel for it and haven't turned it off since. It's a game changer!

I've read nearly every post on this topic and I've yet to be persuaded that there's any significant benefit to the vehicle (battery, brakes, etc) to using 1PD over 2PD. And I think a valid argument can be made that it may actually be more dangerous in some situations.

But It does seem like there's a general feeling here that since 1PD is available, it's somehow better and that one should try to adapt to using it (and if you don't like it, then you're not doing it "right"). That's not a feeling I share.

If you enjoy 1PD, great. I get it. (I drove a Mach-E for two years almost exclusively using 1PD)

But with the Lightning, I prefer 2PD. It just suits my driving style better in this particular vehicle and I'm not concerned about brake pad wear or regen. I particularly like 1PD in Sport mode. Seems like the best combo for me.

sw engineering manager,
There is a reason that Tesla drivers have more crashes than any other car brand,.
There are two theories:
1. Aggressive acceleration & driving.
2. One-Pedal mode being more prone to insufficient braking when needed.

My personal opinion is that 1 pedal mode is prone to be less predictable and the driver is going to be more delayed in getting their foot on the brake pedal when hard braking is necessary to avoid collisions. I think it is at least partially responsible for some amount of Tesla crashes.

Because Tesla's don't regen with the brake pedal, they HAVE to use 1 pedal driving to get best range. Not at all the same situation with Ford where there is little to no penalty to use 2 pedal mode.

I use 2 PD mode as I only have 10 inches of room, front and back, to spare in my garage. In 2 PD mode with AutoHold off, it's very easy to "creep" as if I had an ICE vehicle automatic transmission just by controlling brake pressure. Since I have about 63 years of ingrained 2 PD driving reflexes, I didn't feel like undergoing a potentially expensive experiment to see how well I could forget them.

90% of my driving is with in town and I'm always in 1 peddle drive. Not having to use the break peddle much is a dream come true, I would never go back to two peddle mode for city scape driving.
Highway driving is a completely different story for me, on a long trip steady speed on the highway I turn one pedal drive off, there's less of a resistant feeling and you can feel the acceleration is more free and calmimg.
I had it happen a couple times I stayed in one pedal drive on the highway for a long time and the resistance tention feeling builds up in your body neverous system! I actually got nerve breakdown and mental dizziness from it and had to pull over and stop my trip. This was when I first got the truck and I was still learning one pedal drive.
It's been a year now and my body and nerves have adapted to it on a longer high way trip I found, but I always turn one pedal drive off now Cruising on the highway...
Sections of our highway do have traffic light intersections and you have to stop if it's going Red, I often turn one pedal drive back on well before the intersection
So I don't have to use the break. After the light I turn one peddle drive off and carry on with highway driving..

Always two pedal. I want my braking reflexes intact.

If I ever get stuck in stop & go traffic I will give one pedal another try. But until then, no thanks.
