Seeking Advice: Efficient Tool for Routing EV Charging Cable Under Truck

Hey everyone! I’ve been facing a bit of a challenge with my EV charging routine, and I’m hoping to get some advice. Typically, I back my truck into the garage for charging, but due to a busy schedule, I sometimes forget and need to charge later.

Given the recent cold weather, I prefer not to manually back in. The good news is that my charging cable can reach the port if I slide it under the truck and pull it through. To avoid scratching the charging head, I currently use a plastic lid and a stick to guide it through.

Is there a specialized tool or gadget designed to make this process smoother? Any recommendations or DIY solutions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

You could use a drive over cable protector and keep it on that side. Just make sure it's rated for the weight.

I have the ford pro charger installed. Is there an extension cord for that?

No, you'd have to make your own. Probably easier to have the electrician move your current charger.

You could just back in every time. You will get more comfortable with it over time. Eventually you'll wonder why you were screwing around with the charging cable on the garage floor.

mine is suspended/hung from the ceiling of the carport/garage since I have a high corner-mounted outlet, and also use a 240v 40a extension I made myself.... my outlet is at the opposite corner of where my truck parks... but this works great to keep the cable not only off the ground at all times, and away from potential issues, but also up and over my wife's vehicle...

I used 'garden hanging plant stakes' found at most any hardware store, modified them a little for mounting upside down on the ceiling, and used u-hooks to slip them into... they can 'swing' and have movement as the cable is hung from, or pulled over. They are simple and out of the way. I can walk under them/the cable and not have any issues. Nothing lays on the floor or has to be wound up and put away.

The answer to many 'reach' issues is to simply use an extension cable.

Lectron sells extension cables for J1772 and Tesla (20ft and 40ft), find it here: ev-lectron.com. They are only rated for 40A, however. I have one in my “just in case” travel kit, and it works great.

My mobile kit is a Tesla mobile connector, 80A Tesla Tap, and this extension cable. Same kit I had in my MME, except I had a 40A Tesla Tap in the MachE. I've only used the extension a couple times, but each time it made the difference between having to hit a Fast Charger or not as it allowed me an overnight charge when I otherwise would not have been able to get one.
