the condenser(s) up front are behind the air shutters, so no wind is crossing them in these conditions.

While I don't know about their behavior in -40F, they certainly do open in 20F weather.

I stand corrected - by my own data

It does not appear to open below 32 / freezing (that I can see anyway),
but it does open when it is 32 and higher. The graph is from my drive home from work a week ago when we had a bunch of snow come down which subsequently got trapped in the opening, froze, and left the grill open / out of commission.
