Wireless charging pad not functioning properly.

For the iPhone, could you plug in an Apple MagSafe charger and attach it to the wireless charging pad? It would hold the phone in place.

The wireless charging pad in all Ford vehicles isn't even mediocre. It's super slow and not worth even using it. I don't have my Lightning yet, but if it's anything like my F150 and Mach E, I never used them because they are so bad.

I've also noticed issues with the Wireless charger. Same as other people that the phone gets hot and battery drops while using the wireless charger and Android Auto. I brought this up to my dealer rep and will go see them in person. Pretty annoying.

Android Auto isn't the problem. It's the charger. The phone gets hot no matter of you're using AA or not.

This isn't just a Ford issue. We just bought my wife a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross and the wireless charger doesn't even work for our Galaxy S22+ phones. Charges for about 5s and then cuts out - doesn't matter case or no case.
I have a feeling that most vehicles have issues with the wireless chargers for phones.

That's the waste heat from the inductive coupling - it's unavoidable with wireless power transmission. This is why "wireless charging" for big loads like EVs is pure snake oil. 25% or so of the juice just heats the charger and the load...

Spinning the phone's CPU and wifi modules around like rats in a cagewheel servicing Android Auto generates still more heat, though - in addition to discharging the battery faster than the Ford charging pad can supply power to recharge it.

The way to pin it on Ford's charging pad vs anything else would be to get a good quality 3rd party wireless charger that's certified >10W with the Qi Extended Power Profile ("EPP"), plug it into the outlet Ford has handily supplied, and see if it does any better. I am pretty sure the phone will get just as hot, but it may manage at least to stay charged longer.

Same experience as everyone else here. iPhone heats up like crazy with or without the case on and won’t charge faster than it is being used. My Ram will add charge even running wireless car play (phone screen off of course) and doesn’t heat up like the Ford - inside the case too. Essentially a useless feature unfortunately, but searching other forums it seems a common issue for Ford.

In this case it probably charges incredibly slow because it generates so much heat. There is only so much power in that circuit and a lot of it is being wasted heating things up and not sending energy into the battery.

I have various Qi charging units that I use for charging my phone at my desk, in my living room, etc. I've noticed that some of them are pretty poor, and some of them work really really well. The fastest one I have is the Samsung fast wireless charger, but the best one for working through cases is a relatively thin Anker 10W pad - [email protected].

The one in the truck is likely only a 5V, 1A pad which is the most compatible Qi charging mode but can't keep up. Had the same problem with Tesla's built-in pad when I had a Model Y as a loaner.

I've been thinking of shaving the feet off one of the Anker pads and mounting it in the same place in the truck, to see if the phone will remain on the ledge. I'd plug it into the USB ports and that should allow for better charging, as long as it doesn't exhibit any negative effects with the truck's charging pad.

While taking my first drive over 30 minutes I noticed that my phone's battery level dropped while on the wireless charging pad. On my 2nd drive over 30 minutes I paid attention to the phone and noticed that it would stop charging after a minute or two.

The wireless charger can't keep up with the power demand and wireless charging is inherently inefficient and creates heat, so with newer versions of Android the phone can even overheat and shut down. It's kind of a perfect storm. The only solution is to plug in by USB which addresses both the AA-over-wifi power hogging and the wireless charger heat production, and reserve the wireless charging pad for the passenger.

People don't see this in Teslas because Tesla doesn't support Android Auto...

and Tesla doesn't support iPhone Car Play. But whee..... Spotify and games. I wish Ford would have the option to store camera feed though.

Funny, years of plugging in my phone for wired CarPlay, I have a habit now to just plug it in each time.

I forget the Lightning has wireless carplay and wireless charging....

I have 2 iPhones (Work & Personal) so it's nice to have them connect to the LIghtning with the recent OTA update.

I too gave up on the wireless charger. iPhone 12. Charging intermittent. When it does show "charging" it gets REALLY hot.

I do the phone in an Otterbox. My other Qi chargers are slower with the case, but still work and don't get hot.
