Extremely frustrated here getting my TCU to update. The good news is my usb kicks off every single time so at least I'm over that problem. Currently sitting at OTA equivalent of 2.1. Here's what I've tried to get past the "restart truck to complete install" loop

  • Left the usb in and restarted truck Power On/Engine On
  • Left the usb in and restarted truck Power On/Engine Off
  • Variations of both with the parking brake on, door left open for 10, 20, 30, 60 minutes
  • Disconnected battery for 15, 30, 60 minutes
  • Pull usb in between restarting truck
  • Pull usb while truck is on after restart message pops up
  • Pull usb during update (fuck it method)
  • Locked doors during variations of above
  • Master reset a couple of times, reset module via Forscan a couple of times
  • Since the TCU and APIM are tied together for this update I tried to skip the TCU and do APIM, get in the same restart loop
  • Tried updating via CAN and it insta fails with no error given why
  • Tried multiple USB sticks, freshly formatted Exfat
  • And of course the set it and forget it method the last week.

Any ideas? This one is really pissing me off.
There is one more variation you can try. When prompted to turn the truck off, don’t. Pull the USB, transfer it to your laptop and then continue with the post-install validation while the truck remains running. Select OK when it tells you to turn of the truck and then restart it, just don’t actually do it. You’ve tried everything else. Might as well try this.

If someone could grab a pic of the “status bar” that would be great info to put in the documentation. Especially for those of us who have no patience. LOL!

You're not alone with the patience. Someone else discovered it after I went through the harrowing update and wish I saw the post sooner.

If you click on the text “System Updating...” , located in the top left corner of your screen, you will get the progress bar for your USB update

Son of a bitch had no clue there was a status bar. See below, it flashed 100% real quick but I wasn't fast enough to catch it.

Atleast you're getting progress im still going on 3 weeks with the usb in and nothing. Idk what else to try. No updating messages. It’ll index the usb but thats about it. Even tried a usb-c drive to see if that sparked any interest in the truck but nothing. Its a stubborn S.O.B.

There is no way to provide a time for the APIM since so many are having issues, mine didn't complete until the following morning after sitting all night with the USB stick still in. The others however, have been fine. Here's an updated doc you can print to keep at your side when doing the updates, waiting on @iceman77 to update the link in the first post. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xX3ApbprgKx6y-IRVDpJdCwz6IqL3kHJ1BQSAxX4wKE
Thanks @Bob_Mac
Can I suggest maybe putting a version number / date on the doc for revision history????

I can't believe that progress bar is there and I never saw it. I also can't believe this thread was in the 700's of posts before it appeared. Lol

Amazing!
My theory is this, the update is complete when it hits 100% but, I think that when you restart that's when the update is applied and then the CANBUS takes over hence the lengthy time it takes to complete. @iceman77 thoughts?

I'm in the process of doing that and making other changes. I'll be using dates as the version control. iceman77 did update the first post with the link I provided you, last version took a crap for whatever reason.

Oh I went almost a month without ever getting my USB to start when I was stuck on 1.7.1. If you read through the whole thread I tried literally everything the folks threw at me. Finally and totally randomly one day it updated and finally updated to 2.1 equivalent.
