Extended warranty - thoughts comments

I get it, it’s a gamble. I almost never purchase extended warranties, never on a car.
battery covered. - fine.
I might drive through that 36000 mile warranty in 2-2.5 years.
my concern is more about all the other electronics. It can get expensive quickly.

my 05 f150 had for 16 years 260k miles. The trans, replaced and rear differential were the biggest things, but I don’t think terribly abnormal. i can’t go by without mentioning the PIA triton V8 5.4L spark plug headache. Thanks Ford.
now a ‘19 f150 39 months, no problems.
my ‘13 BMW - UNDER 75K miles - 2 electronic issues that I could not repair myself. $$$

Agreed on never getting it - they are usually a ripoff. The battery is the biggest worry and is covered for 8 years along with all of the other EV powertrain components (power electronics, motors, etc.). Everything else isn't really different from an F150 and many other Ford models so parts (barring supply chain issues) should be readily available and not that expensive. Worst thing cost wise would be the infotainment system, but I wouldn't buy the warranty for that.

I'm really curious what a replacement battery will cost. I'm sure it's at least $20k. I plan to keep my Lightning for the long haul, so the battery is my main worry. I have a 2011 Chevy Volt (#198 off the line), which is near the end of it's battery life (many 2011/12 Volt owners are reporting battery issues, no surprise). A Volt battery replacement from the dealer is $23k, or you can go third party refurb for $6k but with only 18 mo warranty.

What is the cost of a MME extended warranty vs. a ICE Mustang extended warranty? That may give a perspective of what a Lightning extended warranty would cost compared to a F-150. I've never opted for an extended warranty and am not likely to do so with a Lightning.

This gets covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles with the basic Lightning warranty.

The price of batteries will come down over time. They did for the Leaf, and they will for the Lightning because it will sell in large volumes.

That list of covered items under the EV powertrain sure beats Tesla. Charge ports, chargers, DC-DC converter, and gearboxes all are not covered under their 8 year "battery + drive unit" warranty, but those components are expensive - and Tesla will not sell them to you to replace yourself.

I think the ER pack will be close to $20k. Battery costs were about $118/kwh in 2021, but that's not accounting for the price gap between China and US batteries, with US batteries being more expensive, around $155/kwh:

With most of the truck being a regular F150, I would lean heavily to the "no extended warranty" choice. Parts should be available, less expensive, and serviceable by 3rd parties.

The companies who administer extended warranties average a 12% payout of the premium charged. In my book, that’s a sucker bet.

The first new car I bought back in the mid-80s, I paid for the extended warranty. Fast forward several years and I needed to use it..." sorry, that company went out of business, here is what it is going to cost you to make that repair." Never bought an extended warranty again.

If you are on the fence about getting it, I would contact Ford Protect, they can give you a quote for the Lightning just make sure to write down the plan/years/miles/cost and then compare that price to the dealers price. You can get the warranty from Ford Protect after you purchase your truck, so don't feel pressured to get it at the dealer if they've jacked the price up.

But yes to agree with most of the others, very low chance you will need to utilize the warranty, it is more peace of mind if anything.

You want to look at some of the online dealers, including www.zieglerfordesp.com and www.floodfordesp.com for much lower prices.

There is no need to buy an extended warranty (assuming you want to buy one) at time of purchase. You can buy anytime in the first 12 months / 12,000 miles for the exact same cost, and the only benefit you'll miss out on is the free loaner car IF you buy that coverage. After 12/12,000 it goes up around $100, and that lasts until 3 years / 36,000, after which it may go up a little bit more, until 41/41,000.

The battery warranty is already 8 years / 100,000 miles.

Yup. It’d be nice if it were 150k miles. Just going on most of my vehicles. And the extended warranty doesn’t cover it beyond 8 years. Oh well

I'd say the most expensive currently is the EV traction batteries so having 8 years awesome!

My 4 year old PHEV has a 10 year 150,000 mile warranty on the EV battery instead of the 49 state warranty of 8 years / 100K which is nice.
