Now that we have have a number of window stickers being generated for Lightning order holders we are getting data off of those stickers. We have observed that if you have an XLT ER or Lariat ER and add the optional 20" All Terrain tire to your order the GVWR will be 8,400#. If you stick with the 20" All Season tires then the GVWR will be 8,550#.

The inclusion or not of Max Tow does not impact the GVWR with the ER batteries.

Edit: There are states like MA and CO where this change in GVWR has tax rebate implications. Consider changing from All Terrain tires to save $$$$.

If you are trying to maximize payload then you may want to stick with the All Season tire.

. . . and here in Massachusetts, that would seem to disqualify owners from the state EV truck rebate program. https://mor-ev.org/mor-ev-trucks. The cutoff for that program is 8,500 pounds. $7,500 buys a lot of aftermarket tires.

A $7500 state rebate on top of the fed tax credit? Wow that’s generous, let me show this to my state lawmakers here in Mississippi! And why do I hear a lot of people laughing?

I mainly got the all terrain because I wasn't sure if the all season were BSW  Looks like they are both BSW. I would like more info on them and pics.

Which is a little frustrating, I added the tires expecting a bump in GVWR not a decrease. This is my first experience of having an all season increase the GVWR. Never too old to learn🙂

I've been trying to think through why the all terrain tires would deserve a lower GVWR. Here are some thoughts: *This is my speculation and not based on any known facts.

- Within the 275 / 60R20 size for SL rated tires there are two possible service descriptions: a 114 service rating and a 115 service rating. Tires with a 114 rating have a maximum load of 2601 pounds. Tires with a 115 service rating have a maximum load of 2679 pounds. Perhaps the spec for the All Terrain is a 114 service rating and the spec for the all season is the 115 service rating?

- Or maybe during testing the All Terrain tires (which would have slightly higher rolling resistance) generated a bit more heat in the tires. To be conservative, Ford lowered the GVWR to keep the tires within their temperature tolerances.

- Or along the rolling resistance theory, perhaps the higher rolling resistance of the All Terrain tire leads to lower range. To help minimize the impact on range the GVWR is lowered?

At least in the US the AllTerrain tires are a reasonable option. I can't see anyone getting them in Canada as it is a $1000 option. The full set of AllTerrain tires (if I remember correctly) was like $1500. So you effectively pay $500 for a second set of tires.
They haven't said anything about range, but by how much noisy AT are vs AS tires, I would venture to guess they would reduce range by at least 5% (ICE trucks can be up 10-15% less MPG on AT tires)

Great theories, I was thinking the rolling resistance/range is probably pretty spot on. I’m sure they have to do everything to protect that number.

I went with all season tires. I'm not driving off road, though dirt roads are common. In the winter I will be running a dedicated set of snow tires on separate wheels. I'm just not sure whether I will go with 18s or 20s and whether I will use aftermarket rims or Ford rims (though rims from current trucks may not have the desired load capacity I will not be loading up the truck to max capacity in the winter). I was considering 17s for winter, but they are not likely to clear the brake calipers.

As mentioned above if you load limit is less the trucks capacity will be less. Also what can happen with A/T tires is sometimes they have a lower top speed and manufactures then have to limit the top speed to the tires it came with from the factory. The A/T option can bite you both ways on a new truck.

Looking at all the available VIN's on the forum, the common element is indeed, the use of All-Terrain tires, they derate the GVWR by 150 pounds, regardless of the presence of Max Tow Package!!!!

All trucks with base All-Season Tires can carry 150# more.

Folks in Mass, please review your build sheet, if you have All-Terrain tires, and you show a GVWR of 8400#, consider deleting the tire option, go with stock All-Season through the build, this will bump your GVWR to a level that will qualify you (Tentatively) for the MOR-EV-TRUCK rebate.

@broncoaz Your truck is Pro/SR it's too light to qualify regardless
@FordVideoGuy Would you do some sleuthing to see if it is possible for a Lightning order holder who has received a VIN to remove the 20” All Terrain tires from their order?. This would result in the need for the VIN to change. There are several folks in Massachusetts who may miss out on the opportunity for a $7,500 MA tax rebate just because they added All Terrain tires to their ER Lightning order.

See below for details. Perhaps @Ford Motor Company would like to weigh in on this too.

Since the tires on the truck actually determine the 4th character in the VIN would it be possible to change tires after the VIN is issued? E.g. the all terrain tires on an ER Lariat or XLT result in a “V” in the fourth space. Where the all season tires on the same spec truck make that fourth character a “6”.

You can try to amend an order after a VIN is issued but it may not be accepted. Colors are easy amendments that Ford will usually accept but things like tires which could may not be accepted.

It seems crazy that Ford would have altered the 4th character of the VIN for the difference in the tires and GVWR. It means per the 2022 VIN guide the restraint system of the Lightning is category 5. There is room in the guide and the break down that both tires could have used a V in that 4th position and it wouldn't have required a new VIN to change tires. Just seems like they overly complicated it. Im in TX and not missing out on that rebate, but almost want to remove the AT tire anyway, but it would require a new VIN and I'm afraid would throw my date of May 27 off. My date hasn't moved at all like many have, so I'm afraid to screw with the order at this time.

If anyone in MA does it - please keep us updated on your VIN and production dates. If I had $7500 on the line, I'd probably be doing anything possible to get the tires swapped.

Thanks for the update Tim (FVG), hopefully the Mass members are in a position to make the change without troubles.

I reached out via DM to all the Mass members noted in the tracker to give them a personal heads up, I hope everyone is in a good position, @duncanmaio is on the cusp of a build week, he should see a build day next Friday unless requested revision throw a wrench in the works for his scheduling, if they even allow an order revision at this point.
