Sunrun wanting to install Charge Station Pro on 50Amp circuit

Sunrun is trying to schedule the installation of my Ford Charge Station Pro and they are saying they will install on a 50 Amp circuit. My understanding is that it draws 80 Amps, so would be on a 100 Amp circuit. I can't get my Project Coordinator to return my emails or VMs, but the local installer is ready to schedule the install. I know I'd be looking at half the charging time on a 50 Amp circuit, but not sure if the 50 Amp quote is because it won't require a major update to my draw from the city. I can handle the longer charge times, but want to be certain that 50 Amp wouldn't be a problem. Does anyone know the answer? The specs online aren't very clear, and I'm not an electrician, so any advice would be appreciated.

With a 50 amp circuit the charger can be set to draw 40 amps (80%) and it won't be a problem. If they haven't been on site to look at things, I don't know why they are defaulting to 50 amps.

What is the rating of the main disconnect on your load center?

Yes. Not ideal but mine is plugged into a 14-50 till I find more power to feed it. It’s set to 40A of course.

There are a variety of designs but this is an example.
Be easier for you to shoot a photo of your panel and we can figure this out.

Screw Sunrun. Have them ship the Ford Charge Station Pro to you and decline their invitation to install it. Have your local trusted electrician install it. If you don’t have a trusted electrician, find reviews online. (Hint: The local trusted electrician almost certainly isn’t Sunrun.)

Spec for the product is 80A on a 100A breaker using 3g wire. My electrician couldn't find 3g in stock so we ran 2g. Yes, you can downrate the Pro, but if you aren't taking full advantage of the available juice, my advice would be to flip the Pro charger and buy a cheaper unit that *is* designed for a 50A circuit.

I'll speculate this is either a 100A service or a pretty much maxxed out 200A service panel.

If that's the case, save your money and have a 220 installed. Then use the portable charger, or buy an Emporia. You'll get 40 from the Emporia, and up to 48 if hardwired.

Looks like your due for a service upgrade just to acquire a panel with more space!!

Your main disconnect is up stream of this panel, possibly next to the electric meter.

Looks like it's not more than a 125
