So there you are. I am neophyte on Lightening but will get better once I take delivery (hopefully before end of May with a 4/10/23 production date).

It's worth the wait!

I unplugged it yesterday and tossed it in my center console. No warnings or indicators showed up on the dashboard. I texted my salesman this morning and will see what he says. This weekend, I'll inspect the splicing job done on it. Fortunately I didn't need to cut any wires to remove it.

EDIT: And I have a Lariat ER.

I just spoke to my salesman. He said they put them on all cars the moment they're delivered. It's used with a dealership account to help track stolen vehicles. Then when the vehicle is sold, it can be part of a dealer add-on package, but if the customer declines, then they simply don't activate the customer Lo-Jack account. I have no clue if the dealership account can still track the GPS device at that point, but now that I've taken it off, it's no longer a concern.

Hmm, I wonder how many of us have that under our dash. I would imagine a lot of dealers do it. Where did you buy from in Texas?

You should tell him to at least have the people installing them make sure they are more secure. Having the unit fall under the brake pedal could be dangerous.

You should also tell them to clearly state to their customers what they have done to their truck.

Having someone else be able to track my vehicle, at will, without my permission would piss me off.

This☝

I have a pretty high tolerance for tracking in exchange for convenience - I happily carry my phone wherever I go - but no convenience and no disclosure is beyond my level of comfort.

These are very common, and your dealer was being nice in his spin of why it's there. It's so it's easy to repo the truck if you miss payments.

"Protect your dealership and assets with GoldStar, the premier provider for GPS telematics in the U.S. Using proprietary technology and features, GoldStar provides trusted data to help your customers pay promptly"

https://www.spireon.com/solutions/buy-here-pay-here-dealers/

If they can trick you into paying extra for it by calling it a "LoJack" - bonus. But they didn't pay the ~$60 plus labor to splice that into your truck "just in case" they might be able to upsell you.

I found the one in my old truck when I was debugging a persistent parasitic battery drain. Which went away after I removed it.
