Almost backed into a car because i didn’t realize the screen had frozen when i started backing up! Thankfully the parking sensor audio alerted me I was getting close to something and I looked out the rear view mirror.

Totally my fault for relying on the camera but I’ve never had a car with a camera where the camera just freezes while reversing. Had to do the two button reset to get the screen working again.

23 Lariat ER that I got a week ago.

Not confidence inspiring. Wonder if I can use this as a way to try to get Ford to update my software to the latest versions…

Yeah that is very odd, for sure. I don't think that's ever happened on my 2022, but then again I almost never use my cameras. I always turn my head and use my mirrors.

Keep us posted and let us know if it happens again!

I'm not sure if that is a software issue, camera hardware or both. If that continues to happen then take it in to a dealer if you can. During my battery recall work they replaced my rear camera stating it was "glitchy". Mine never froze, but it would black out sometimes.

I’m inclined to believe it’s a software issue since the entire screen was frozen until I did the two button reset.

Sometimes my backup camera should come on but instead the entire screen goes black. After I drive forward for a few hundred feet, the screen turns on and all is normal. But the problem doesn’t happen most of the time so how am I supposed to get it fixed?

This happens to me frequently. About 50% of the time, when I first start the truck, either the camera freezes or the whole display goes black. This has been going on for months. It resets itself after about 30 seconds but that doesn't help me when I'm trying to use the camera to back up. This never happens except right when I turn on the truck. Would love a solution for this.

Also, what's the 2 button reset secret? Maybe that would help me reset the screen more quickly when this happens to me.

I always recommend including @Ford Motor Company on posts like this as they do actively monitor these forums and often reach out to coordinate with owners on investigating when needed.

Hey @Ford Motor Company , this is the first of 7 vehicles with a backup camera I’ve had since 2015 or so that has had ANY issue with the camera not working. It is very dangerous and needs to be a HIGH PRIORITY fix. In both this and Reddit, which only represent a small amount of owners, there are numerous people reporting the same issue. Not ok. If it continues, I’m finding a way to get rid of this truck because this is a safety issue. I can deal with the little bugs here and there but the backup camera needs to work.

Please do not use the screen (camera outputs) solely to back up. It, and the park assist are only aids. Even in the best of times, there is a fractional lag. Back up using your mirrors as a primary reference - they never lie or lag. The screen can be part of the full scan since it fills in some blind spots and can help in tight areas, but while you are moving, you MUST use the mirrors to keep you and everyone around you safe.

Of course we want the safety technology to work well so also please report this using the feedback feature on the screen. Ford needs to know this.

I've also noticed it takes 30 seconds or so for Sync to initialize on start. Until it is completes it's initialization, it is very laggy. If I need to back up, I pause until things are "warmed up".

The Sync reset - press and hold the Volume-Down and the Skip-Right buttons on the steering wheel for 10 seconds - this restarts Sync. It can be done while driving as well if Sync hangs up for any reason.

This type safety issue should also be reported to NHTSA.

Just got the truck back from its second battery module replacement. Only 21 days this time. Went to back out and the screen was frozen. Have never had this happen before. I’m on 6.1 release (updated while it was in for service). Had to restart system.

I filled out the NHTSA form as linked above. This is unacceptable.

Hi Jesse! I can look into your Lightning's camera concern on my end. To get started, could you please send a private message over with the name/location of your local Ford dealer and your Lightning's VIN?
