I just checked my local utility rate (SCE) and found that they raised prices again!

During peak hours (after work), I can charge cheaper at Tesla Superchargers w/ membership rate than charging at home !

Almost half price charging at Tesla ($0.34) vs home on L2 ($0.63)!!!

Also a case for pulling power from truck at those times. If we get variable pricing in MA (Eversource and Nat Grid are being forced to, Munis not). I would find a way to automate pulling from truck during peek and refilling overnight.

Solar in MA doesn't make sense anymore with Sun and new net metering. 20-25 year ROI

Like others have said, installing solar at home changes the equation. Even with the up front cost, it's hard to argue with the long term payback if you adopt an EV.

If you ask me, the best reasons to drive an EV are all in the ride. Near silence and a supernatural power curve have me hooked. My Lightning is in the shop and driving my 2003 VW van feels positively Stone Age!

Great point.

We didn't buy our Mach-E and Lightning to save money. Can't spend a combined $135,000 and say you saved money, it's simply ridiculous. POWER

I never saw it as exciting because it was cheap - I saw it as exciting because it provides options for those infrequent road trips.

WOW, where in MA are you? I'm on Worcester and thought .30 was high (.15/kwh + .15 delivery)

No EV bashing here.... fully committed (to charge at home) and love my Lightning; never going back. However I am a frugal yankee.

Here in New England, the non-subscription rates for supercharges is between .45 and .55 per kwh. The avg cost per gallon of unleaded is $3.58

I put these number into this calculator.... https://chooseev.com/savings-calculator/

The cost per mile results in Lightning getting 5 less miles than the cost of gas. The breakeven kwh cost is $.37. I pay .22 at home and .35 at vacation home (both the MA, Muni vs big guy)

Just facts presented. Tesla charging for road trips and poor planning only. Yes, I know the other costs are not factored (oil etc) and does not consider the environment.... so check those comments at the door.

This may be a minority opinion, but I’d be for $1/kWh at EA and Tesla if it guaranteed availability of 500A (with no waiting in line) and reliability (no inoperative or derated chargers) of DCFC on a long-distance trip. L2 charging at home is the standard for economical EV operation. The price of DCFC should be high enough to discourage its use for local driving- it should be like “Super Premium” fuel for EVs.

Won't help reduce CO2 at that price :)

You have to include the cost of installing a charging station by/in your garage ($2,000 US), or at the very least running wires for a 240v plug so you can use your portable cable ($500 from ford now).

The Ford dealership in Mt. Airy, Maryland just installed some charging stations. The display indicates a price of $0.59 / Kwh. Yikes!!! Well, they are not the least expensive dealership for anything. If I talk to them about a Lightning again, I need to ask if there is a discount for customers, but I think I am going for the home charging options.

I think you could get a Level 2 home charger installed for less than $2K. I installed a Grizzle-E charger at home. $350 for the charger, $15 for a 50A breaker, $80 for a commercial 50A receptacle, $30 for an enclosure, ~$7/ft for the 6ga wire. I did it myself but an electrician is probably $125/hr?
Granted finding a competent electrician may be priceless

I charge at home. That's where the real savings are. But I'm excited for my upcoming trip to Norfolk.

Using a Tesla membership for my drive, it will cost less than with an EA membership, and will be more reliable to boot. And with the 250Kw charging giving roughly the same output as the 350kW EA units, I won't have to worry about people complaining I'm using "their" charger.
Exactly how I feel. I'll only use Tesla chargers on a road trip. I have a charger in the garage of my condo in Boston, and I have the Ford Charge Station Pro at my camp in Maine. (Cost $7k to get it installed as it was quite a project to get the 200 Amp service on my dirt road.)

Um my L2 installation was $200 (parts & wires) plus case of beer (labor) for my master electrician EV certified buddy.

All prices in CAD.

Gas here is $1.60/liter and Tesla charges $0.82/kwh.

F150L @ 40kwh/100km is $32.80
F150 2.7 @ 13L/100km is $20.80

Charging at home at $0.14/kwh cost $5.60.

I won't be using Tesla until at least June when my adapter gets shipped but it's not a cost I'm worried about as it will be infrequent.
$0.82/kWh??!!! Where? Is this an average rate?

Sadly, not all of us have an electrician buddy for free labor. The generic quotes online from contractors pointed to by Ford and Tesla were around $1695 plus the actual wall unit. In my case the panels are in the basement on the far side from the garage - 95+ feet of wire and a section may require conduit. The wire has to be copper, and I heard it runs around $9 / foot. Yes, I can save a little by trying to run the wire myself. Of course, I will want to add panels for switching to off grid power from the truck or my gas generator in case of an outage. :)
