TL;DR Your actual off-peak rate is 6.76 cents/kWh. Read on.

I worked in the industry for 35 years. Be careful of rates like this. A lot of folks think they can 'game' the system by moving loads to off-peak but in reality they don't and the super-peak rates end up costing more. But the day-time rates are much, much higher as you allude to. Like a casino, the house always wins.

Here is the tariff sheet from the page you linked to:

So the actual off-peak rate (ignoring the fixed Basic Service Charge) is

$.0634 here in SW WA coast. ~ 6 1/2 cents anytime of day. I use 30-40 KWH per day so a “fill up” is $2-$3.

Man, I've got it good down here is Georgia. Georgia Power lets you charge between 11pm and 7am for a rate of 2.1 cents per kWh if you are signed up for the "overnight advantage" plan. So basically I can fill up my truck for $2.75 (131 kWh X 2.1 cents equals 275 pennies). Of course that doesn't include the taxes/fees/minimum charge etc. But still, $2.75 to fill a pickup truck so you can drive it 300miles. Crazy cheap. Here is the link for those of you that are local:

Hell, even if I charge it during "regular" pricing which is 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m year round I'm only paying 9.8 cents. That mean I can fill up for $12.84.

Just don't charge during on-peak, which is 2pm to 7pm June through Sept. Filling it up would during that timeframe cost 28.6 cents per kW, or $37.47.

Ask any ICE F-150 owner the last time they filled up there truck for less than $40 and they will probably tell you it was the '90's and you have to be talking to somebody older than 40.

When I was in high school in the early 90's the gas station across the street would occasionally run gas at 79 cents a gallon. My VW Bug had a ten and a half gallon tank, which means I could fill it up for $8.30.

Now fast forward 30 years... and I can fill up a truck that can drive itself down the highway, has 580 HP (as compared to the Bug's 40 HP), has A/C, a touch screen almost as big as the TV that was in my parents living room back in the 90's (We had a 19") attached to the dash, all for 1/3 of the cost! That's not even adjusted for inflation! Crazy progress! And yet, people don't want to switch from ICE...I don't understand.

Still, what is everybody else experiencing as far as cost to fill your Lightning? I visited Kirkwood CA and my buddy told me that power out there was running something crazy like 80 cents a kWh. If that was the case, I could see a $105 bill to fill a Lightning, which is about even with ICE. Am I just super blessed to be in Georgia where the power is cheap?
in Michigan we are on the ev program for power. I forget the name of it but anyway on peak is .14 cents, off peak is .10 cents and super off peak 12a-6a is .7 cents year round so not quite as good as you but damn close! Wife just got a blazer ev and I got my lightning. No more gas!

My bill just came in, covering mid July to mid August, $0.3335 a KWH all inclusive.

No TOU's or credits for me due to FoMoCo being tight lipped about data sharing with National Grid

In Kansas City, Missouri we are on the EV time of use plan and charge from Midnight to 6 am for .02 in the winter and .03 in the summer. We then power our house daily with the lightning when we are in town. Will save about $1,500 a year off our electric bill. Wife has an Ioniq 5 that she commutes with and also charges from Midnight to 6 am. Haven't even calculated the savings from not buying gas but it's a big number.

Our other home is offgrid in Montana with solar and we have no utilities there except for propane for about $250 per year. We are huge fans of solar and EVs.

Last I checked CT is up to ~$0.29/kWh for July-Dec. including delivery and fees (up from $0.23/kWh last year). Utility moratorium ended on 5/2 so we all get to pick up the tab while for-profit Eversource keeps paying executive bonuses. They just announced rate increase last week for "EV infrastructure upgrades" so they can shift the blame onto us, all while recently cutting their EV charger rebates. Local news cycle already picked up the narrative, bet they use it to try to implement some mileage agnostic EV road tax.

Unscientific, but my electric bill the first year of ownership went up $400. I charge 98% at home (GA also and on the same plan as you).

That was certainly the case last time I considered TOU. I was paying $0.13 / kWh but if I switched, Night would go down to 0.9 and day go up to 0.36. Did the math and realized, I would be paying more to have less freedom. In winter, I like to charge during the day when it is warmer.

Also folks should not use what their truck is saying to figure out the cost per mile. Instead check what the meter/ power company / EVSE unit is saying. I just juiced the truck. The truck says it received 21.30 kWh but EVSE says it delivered 26.087. 22.5%. is a hefty chunk of loss. This means even though power company rate for me is 18 cents, it cost me 23 cents to charge the truck.

Disclaimer: everyone should do their own reading and math to figure out their loss.

Edit: Using total energy reading from the truck may introduce errors in calculation since that has a lot of guesses already baked into it. Or I may be loosing actual energy somewhere else. So scratch that 22.5% above for now until I figure out what is going on with my truck. A better way to figure out the loss is looking at the live kW going out of the juicer (EVSE) and Live kW going into the battery (from OBD-II). If your juicer does not tell you, you can use the two censors (from car scanner/OBDII) for AC voltage and AC current going in. Multiplying those gave me the same number as what Juicer gave me as output. That got me the same numbers as @TaxmanHog has been getting (7%-9% loss).

Yep. There are definitely people that can benefit from these rates. But like you did, they should occasionally check their bill and do the math. First make sure you can replicate your existing bill in Excel. Lots of charges (some hidden) that apply to ALL kWh. Then try another rate and see what the cost is. You’ll need to know your usage by time period which is the trickiest part. But if you’re already on a TOU rate like OP you’ll have those numbers.

I’d be glad to do a rate comparison for anyone who wants to private message me.

In my neck of PG&E California - we’re paying .38/kwh off peak summer, and 33 in winter. (This is with a monthly fee of $15 to lower the rate). Works out to about 80% of gas. They have an EV rate that’s a little cheaper in the summer but more expensive in the winter. DCFC here is 42-69c, with Tesla on subscription being the cheapest.

My brother is trying to figure out if he should go on a TOU plan. He doesn't own an EV but it considering one, as he doesn't drive much and it's all city/back highway. @bmwhitetx I might hit you up this weekend after I talk to him and see what kind of information his utility provides. It would be interesting to set up a spreadsheet where he could punch in potential EV usage and see how that might affect the bill on various plans.

$.30/kWh at home (Level 2) , $.15/kWh up the road at the municipally owned DCFC and $.08/kWh at our place in Maine (Level 2).

To go 100 miles, rough cost:
Home - $12.50 so a bit better than an ICE truck about
DCFC - $6.25 better then ICE
Maine - $3.50 - about the cost of a gallon of gas.

Blended is about $7.50/100 mi so roughly 2 gallons to go 100 miles or 50 miles to the gallon.
