Before trying to solve a problem, we need to correctly identify the problem. From my experience and what I've observed others discuss, a problem arises when someone is waiting in line to charge and there is someone charging who doesn't need to be.

There's various reasons why the person doesn't need to be charging. Maybe they already have enough to get to their destination, or they could charge at home but they have free charging at the station, or it would be more efficient to make another charging stop down the road due to their vehicle's charging curve, or they just "feel" like they need more charge than they actually do. Why do people keep charging when they don't need to? Sometimes people don't understand charging curves, sometimes people are just inconsiderate, sometimes it's cheaper, and sometimes they are just not aware of the situation.

Potential solutions to the problem should aim to prevent, deter, or stop people from charging when they don't need to, but also allow people to charge when they need to. And that's the tricky part, because everyone's charging needs are different and every EV charges differently.

The idea to limit charging past, say 80%, does have some basis in fact. Most EVs will slow charging somewhere in the 80-100% range, and the more charge you have, the more likely it is that you can make it to your destination. Charge % is the only variable that can address at least some of the reasons why people charge when they don't need to. It's impossible to know whether someone doesn't need to go past 50%. But as you approach 100%, it's more likely that they don't.

Potential solutions have to address people's behavior to deter them from charging when they don't need to. You could have popup messages, educational videos on the screen, etc. But what people are most responsive to is money. Price is a great, proven way to modify consumer behavior.

My idea is to have tiered pricing. 80-90% the price doubles. 90-100% the price triples. This does nothing to keep people from charging below 80% when they don't need to. But it does address the issue that EVs typically slow charging somewhere in the 80-100% range, and it also addresses the fact that the closer you get to 100%, the less likely you need that much charge.

This would serve as a deterrent, but also allow people the option to fully charge if needed. Sure, it punishes those folks, but the tradeoff is that it's likely to get people out of the way. That tradeoff is something that we need to determine whether it's worth it.

These damn chargers (investments) cant be subsidized for forever. The operators need to have sustainable profit margins, and the margins needs to be driven off serving the most kwh per hour (bang for the buck). If the charge is not slowed down in any way shape or form due to the charging provider the person driving the vehicle should be penalized for it.

The "green energy" gravy train cant go on forever.

Way to many people feel their need supersedes the person that was there first.

just sit back relax and chill. You will make it to your destination, when you are supposed to.

life to way to short to get stressed about having to wait to charge.

If it matters that much move to the next station.

Nobody is saying a bolt cannot charge because it charges at 50kw, they are saying it should not charge to 100% unless needed because it does so at a speed that is MUCH MUCH SLOWER than lower in the charge curve. Whatever amount of energy the are adding could be added in a small portion of the time.
The problem is people are impatient and can’t just wait. As I have said before when we had this same discussion last year with other people, are you the third or forth person that asked the bolt person or are “trying to educate them” and that causes them to snap and you find yourself in a bad situation or a body bag.

Everyone just needs to chill and accept the only charge situation you have any control over it the one in your own garage. End of story.

Once you realize that you will be at peace and enjoy life and your trip more.

because mot chargers bill by energy delivered it encourages the charger company to kick off slow charging cars, or cars that are past peak charging rate
This could be fixed if they charge an additional “per minute” fee to normalize the amount of money they could be getting, plus deters those that just wanna.

As I said before, all of the stations need some 48 amp evse so people can move over to once they hit the 90-95% crawl. That allows for them to implement a cap (90% not 80%) and still allow people that really need a deep charge the option.

There is good reason, and your own arguments made it at times. All car have a different curve. So you only have two options a kW or a % option to cut off if there were level 2 evses onsite. While I have advocated for a 20 kW bench, percentage may be the most universal for the end user.

The reality is the 90% makes sense from battery protection, sales targets, and convenience.

As others have said, the need to deep charge will go down as more stations come on line.

The other option to your point would be to include some 50-70 kWh DCFC on site for the slower chargers and those that hit that magic cap whatever they decide.

All I know is 80-85 is too low, and I will not be “educating” people as some on here want to.

You want people to take up a spot for 10 mins. while waiting to continue to charge 85 to 100???????
NAH! If I was waiting in line that would piss me off.

Sounds like you need to start your own charging company so you can set the limits you want.

I work in regulation, you have to set these “arbitrary numbers” to a data point that is around the tipping point. Unfortunately it sounds like when this becomes industry standard you will be disappointed because it will be an arbitrary number that works for the majority, not the minority. 🤷‍♂️
