I just think EA needs to only allow the free charging plans for the manufacturers that have them, to only be up to 80% free, then any charging above that level is full price. Every time I see someone hogging a station to 100%, it's a free session. If they only made 0-80% free, then the situation would be basically fixed.

In my opinion it should become best practice to have some Level 2 chargers next to virtually all DCFC installs. Then put very hard limitations on charging above 85% at DCFC. That way no one is left in the dark

Quick research shows a very very rough number of $100,000 per DCFC plug. If you can off load any % of the plug availability to a $1,000 Level 2 plug. Why the F wouldn't you?!?!?

The idea being for maximum value return of that asset (DCFC plug) it should measured as avg kwh being served. Thus it should be greatly discouraged to allow anyone not pulling near maximum rates to be using that plug.

This could easily off load DCFC use in 2 scenarios I can think of with minimal negative to the end user.

1) charging between 85% and 100% (move to level 2 if you truly need that much!)

2) Cold battery.... if the vehicle is cold and thus cant charge at Max DCFC, then they should start their charge on Level 2 to warm the battery and then move to the DCFC. (e.g. The debacle in Chicago last February '24.)

if the industry wants to be sustainable it needs to get better ROI for DCFC installs. Charging over 85% should be less and less necessary with more installs popping up. More frequent higher rate charges is better utilization of the asset. In my opinion there should be resistive practices in place to deter slower charging use on DCFC.

To your point, I think penalizing slower charging vehicles is totally merited.

100% agree on this. If I was charging at 48amps while I wait in line, I might end up being ok to leave. ~10kw charging will get me like, 20 miles in an hour. If my original estimate when I roll into say, Bedford PA, was saying I'd get home with -5%, then grabbing a bite at sheetz instead of trying to wait in line for one of the fast stalls might make sense for me. Or while I slow charge the line goes away. Or, use it when the entire site is randomly down and didn't realize it.

Rivian at Breezewood PA has some slow chargers with their fast ones. I always thought that was pretty cool.

You clearly don't know the charging curve, because at 85% you're not at 60kW and just above 90% you fall to 6kW. That's a level 2 charger.

I gave you the example, you choose to ignore it as you gaslight. The retired local guy who is charging to 100% because he can, because he has the time, and doesn't care that those of us in line are on a trip. He could charge at home, he could charger there to 80% and leave, but he chooses to inconvenience others because time doesn't matter to him. And I know this because I engaged him in conversation. And, as I said, it was at a de-rated EA to top it all.

I hope you have an enjoyable time charging to 100% when you don't need to. Hopefully those waiting in line on a trip don't take exception to your view of the world. But don't count on it.
