So I’m dumb. This is my first EV, and I’m willing to take some heat with some dumb questions. I did search and maybe I didn’t search correctly.

I just took ownership of a Lightning and I wanted to test a charge at a Blue Ovel network station. I went to a local EA Charge station at our local Mall. I set things up in the app, and connected the power cable and everything went fine. I walked around the Mall while things charged.

When I got back I really wasn’t sure what to do. I grabbed the cable and pressed the button to disconnect from the truck to end the charging session. This lead me to a question. Is this the proper way? Should I stop the charging session another way? Like should I first click a button first to stop charging before disconnecting the cable?

For DC charging you should press the unlock button next to the port. This is all in the manual.

you can also stop it at the charger or in the chargers/FordPass app...

...and if it's an EA station, there's likely a "Stop Charging" button on the EA station's touchscreen -- I think there is, but when at an EA station I always use the same option from the EA app itself and then unplug once I hear the charging stop and the EA station screen then changes to the charge summary or the "please move your vehicle to avoid idling charges" notice.

you actually did exactly what anyone can do, even if you don't have those other options: the button on the CCS handle itself is designed to 'disconnect' the charging session if it is pressed...it's obviously designed to safely disconnect ANY vehicle from the station's power...

there are several 'ways' to stop or disconnect charging - you've not done anything out of the ordinary

This makes sense. In the future I’ll still use the disconnect button from the station or the button next to the charge port first.

If you use the station to stop the charge, you’ll probably get a message on the instrument panel to the effect “Charge Fault - See Manual.” It’s nothing to worry about, but using the button in the charge port avoids this.

You're not dumb, just new

There ARE no stupid questions (well, OK, yes there are, but this isn't one of them)

This is what this forum is for - I myself have certainly asked many basic questions

Welcome to Lightning ownership & the forum!

I think I can challenge this statement ;)

No, I know, I’m just naive. I’ve read quite a bit before getting the truck, so I understand a bit of what’s going on, but I’ll still be asking some newb questions that I can’t find in the search.

Thanks for this, good idea to just have the truck send a stop signal

Disconnecting is a bit like turning off your computer. Push the charge button in the left cover, click stop on the charger screen, or other wise stop any other "software" way is the soft stop; pull the cable out is the "hard" stop.

On your computer You can go through the menu and click "shutdown", or you can flick through power switch. Both work and neither is awful, but one is graceful and the other is aggressive. Long term I don't expect any harm so it's up to you if it's a big deal.

pull the cable out is the "hard" stop.
The only way to stop a charge by pulling the cable out would be to use the hidden mechanical override. You can’t just grab the handle and pull.
PSA: Don’t use the mechanical release while current is flowing.
