Wait on Ford or buy Lectron Vortex Direct?

Since it’s no secret who makes the Ford NACS adapter for Ford, and Ford is out of stock, is there any reason I should not buy one direct? My 2024 did not come with one, and I am without an adapter. Any reason to wait on Ford?

Only if you want the ford authorized one to hedge your bets if something bad happened. As Lectron clarified, Ford’s is not the Vortex

Is there concerns the Tesla EVSE will sense it’s not an actual Tesla or Ford adapter and shut down or not work? I can’t imagine so, but I thought I read only Ford-supplied adapters woukd work.

There’s no active electronics in the adapters, so third party adapters like A2Z and Lectron have worked fine. It’s really only an interesting situation if something was damaged during a session and Ford or Tesla started asking questions after the fact.

Nothing wrong with my recent use of A2Z's Typhoon Pro adapter. Willing to bet that you'll get an adapter from Lectron or A2Z way before you get a replacement from Ford or the Ford branded adapter.

Given those of us who registered in first days/hours still dont have our free Ford ones - and now the recall - dont expect one for a long time just buy the a2z.

It's a game changer for range anxiety (or charger roulette). You'll sleep better with one in truck.

Agree with you there. I bought my Lightning *knowing* there was a huge backlog of orders for the adapter so I went off and put an order through A2Z. My thought is, if/when I do get the free one from Ford, I can either keep it as a spare or give it away to someone who needs it.

A Ford one is guaranteed to work and in the extremely unlikely event there's a problem (like overheating or damage to the truck or charger) you are off the hook.

Production of Ford adapters is ramping up significantly. They just announced that they are adding Lectron as an OEM supplier in addition to Tesla. However, the Ford Lectron adapter was co-engineered between them and is not the same as the Vortex adapter.

Here's my experience with adapters:

1) Bought a Lectron via Amazon.
2) Failed when ambient temp was > 96 degrees, you can cool it and try again, mostly that works.
3) Returned it within 30 days after multiple failures that's how I can be so sure about the 96 degree.
4) Bought a A2Z Typhoon Pro , has worked under all conditions all summer long in 100+ temps.
5) Have been waiting for my Ford adapter since April 2024, still no joy November 1st
6) Borrowed my neighbors Ford adapter, worked fine at 100+ degrees but did get VERY warm.

So personal experience shows the A2Z sheds heat better for some reason. Probably 25 or so Supercharges since new, no failures with the A2Z, it also gets warm to hot to the touch, but nothing like the Ford and Lectron.

Check out the news today. Ford will start shipping Ford-branded Lectron adapters now. I believe they needed to wait until the UL certifications came out before switching suppliers but this should ease the Tesla induced supply chain issues.

The only issue I see with purchasing a Lectron or A2Z adapter is the liability acceptance by the user. The Ford branded Tesla built adapter pushes some liability to Ford and Tesla. Up to now, 3rd party adapters have not been UL or CSA-certified, but both should be coming soon.
