The pictures I saw didn't look "Fully Burned". It sounded like they were just going really fast and hit a truck-proof tree and wall. Hard to say what was on fire. Maybe the LV battery burned? Seems like if it was the main battery the damage would have been far more extensive and visible.

The vehicle is packed with electrical wiring, both high and low voltage. Which will burn when the right short circuit is created in the crash. Which will eventually ignite the rest of the interior like any vehicle fire.

One would expect a traction battery fire to get that stainless hot enough to oxidize it, not to mention burn off the tires, so the battery must have held up impressively. It says something about battery robustness (and almost certainly quick and competent first responders) that with so much of the cabin apparently burned out, the battery held.

Really sorry that the occupants didn't make it. Sympathy to their families and friends.

Almost 7,000 lb of metal at high speed, gives me respect for the tree. I am glad it was a tree and not a pedestrian. The tree in my front yard once saved my life in a similar accident. Some girl overdosed on her drugs and pushed the gas instead of the break. Drove through my fence and directly toward me while I was partly under my car working on it (on the jack). I would definitely be toast if my tree was not there.

Every time I get behind the wheel, I have to remind myself 8000 lb.ft of torque + 6000 Ib weight is a deadly weapon not a toy. I hope these sad events help us ease up on the go pedal.

8000 foot lbs of torque!
I want yours, be great for pulling semi trailers.
Should be able to do the speed limit up even a steep hill.

That was the number based on what it feels like when I give it the beans ;)
