Hello guys new member here, had a question about the charge point charger hardwire, i ended up doing the 80amp breaker with #4 awg thhn but its only giving me 40amps at charge. Wanted to know if anybody has installed this with 80amp breaker running into this situation? If not then ill just swap it out with 60amp breaker and 6 awg thhn. Or is there a setting on truck to change amps? Thanks

48ampa is the most your truck will request. If the charger (EVSE) is plugged in (not hardwired) the max it will output is 40amps.

The majority of 2024 + trucks will only charge at a maximum of 48 amps, a few exceptions for fleet orders of ER battery packs with the added option of dual OBC's

If it's already installed, leave the wiring and breaker. It's not hurting anything and you're future proof.

You probably have to go into the ChargePoint app to increase the charge rate to 48. I believe that model will actually let you set it to 50 amps, and your current wire will support it.

Correct, in my case its hardwired. I just wanted to make sure before i change the rough in on charger. Thank you

Problem is i have it set at 80amps on app, thats what im not understanding. On another note, charger says 6awg is max wiring, but how can you get 80amps with 6 wire. Doesnt make sense.

As said, your truck won't charge at over 48a regardless of what charger you have.

Unless you can somehow get money back for the 4 aqg and 80a breaker there is zero reason to switch to 6awg and a 60a breaker now.

The Charge Point app is only controlling the pilot signal from the EVSE, telling the truck I'm "capable" of giving you 80 amps, the trucks say's thanks but I can only take 48 amps, my inverter can't flow more than that amount.

Why you only see 40 amps actually flowing may be measurement tolerance or the truck is reducing the flow slightly, there is no driver interface to the trucks OBC (unlike Tesla's)

To be clear, regardless of what your truck can use (48amps), the proper wiring for an 80amp charger is for a 100amp circuit, including 100amp breaker. 80% usage. Or, 125% of pull.

I suspect your #4 awg thhn is also undersized for 80amps. Not an electrician.

This 80amp charger is brand new for them. Can't find the manual or FAQs or anything on their website.

You can't. The ChargePoint doesn't support 80 amps. The most it can deliver is 50 with a 70 amp breaker. It's in the manual.

Just to be clear the breaker does not limit the amount of power. It will trip if you go over the maximum amperage due to heat but other than that it has no effect on power.

Well that depends. We don’t know which truck he has. I have a 23 lariat ER which can charge up to 80amps.
