Tesla Model X
Our 2023 Model X has been a roller coaster and seriously considering trading it in for a Lightning Platinum.

What's the experience been like for those who moved over from a Model X? One major complaint that seems to come up is the infotainment complared to Tesla, and how it's rather slow. Is it that bad, especially coming from a Tesla? Also, how has range been on the Lightning compared to the Model X?

I have 3 Tesla’s, one of which my wife’s 2020 X, and a 24’ Platinum Lightning for 2 months. Infotainment hasn’t bothered me a bit. You only have YouTube however, if that matters to you. I would say the X is more efficient, maybe 5-10% better if I had to guess.

Which do you like to drive more? The X or the Lightning?

We have a long range Model Y and a Lightning. The Lightning seems to have slightly better real world range than the Tesla. I can get an honest 300 miles of range in the Lightning with mixed city/rural highway driving. I usually do 270-280ish on the Y even through its rated for 320. Either one is way more than enough for daily driving.

You won’t be able to get the same road trip performance as the X or Y. Primarily because the Lighting battery is 30% bigger and recharging peaks around 170kwh vs 250kwh on Teslas. Also since the Lightning is shaped like a brick it’s best to keep it at the speed limit on the interstate. The drop off is slightly less noticeable in a more aerodynamic Tesla. Our typical supercharger stop in the Y is around 10-20 minutes and the Lightning is 25-30 minutes. May or may not matter for you depending on how many long trips you take and how much of a hurry you are in.

Lighting infotainment definitely is not as responsive as the Teslas “iPad like” responsiveness. It doesn’t really bother me because I’m using CarPlay 99% of the time and the trucks touch screen is simply displaying that interface.

That said I’d still prefer the Lightning over the Y if both are in the driveway for me to choose. It’s smoother, quieter, comfortable seating setup, better visibility, more storage, fit and finish are awesome.

One is a mid size cuv, the other is a truck.

Do you need a truck? Get the lightning, it's an f150 and does truck stuff incredibly well. Most truck people don't care about ui responsiveness either, they'd prefer dials and buttons. Before anything else came to market the model x was Imo, the best offering. Now, with so many other options, I'd never touch a Tesla.

I bought the lightning because I need a truck and it's fu@king awesome.

I came from a model S and while Tesla does many many things better, the truck is better. It's just a little different. I wish charging was easier and that UI was better but I do like the buttons because I don't like not having buttons (went for the xlt). But yes the switch for me wasn't crazy and the warranty and fact that the company has been making trucks forever gives me peace of mind.

Excellent assessment. I would mirror these comments.

We have had a 3, Y and currently own a 24 X and a 23 Lariat ER. The Tesla tech blows the Lightning away and so does the charging speed. That being said we use the lightning as the primary family vehicle due to the comfort and space inside the cabin. As for range every Tesla we had has blown the Lightning away in range. I live in the south so if you drive at 75 you’re going to get run over. If you road trip it is considerably easier to do it in the Tesla due to the tech and efficiency. We are going to take Lightning to Orlando next month to try it out but so far ABR is estimating the trip will take 45 minutes longer than the X.

Thanks. I feel like I want the Lightning for the comfort and cabin space (I’m 6’5”) but I just love how seamless Tesla’s tech is.

I own a 2020 Model X and a 2022 lightning lariat; the lightning is my daily driver. It's comfortable and secure. The model X has so many nuances. The X is in the garage but pulling it out of the garage (in the winter) is often accompanied by condensation in the pillar cameras. Condesation of the pillar cameras causes the autopilot to shut down but my local Tesla service center says that the remedy is preheating the cabin with defrost on full mode. Putting four or five people in the lariat is much less complicated than putting four people in the model x - the falcon wing doors just do not reliably raise all the way up for passengers to comfortably enter the rear seat. There are many more annoyances with the Model X (I really liked my 2015 Model S) but I've come to resent Musk, who heralded climate conern and sold out to a climate change denier occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave! Go with the Lightning if those are your choices.
