Is it really worth the extra $10,000 on the Pro for the Extended Range battery? Or for that matter $7,000 for the other trims?

The standard range pack is 230 miles versus 300 miles on the extended range.

I know that they likely underrated the battery but that's almost $150 extra for every mile of range and you would need to do more math to see how that works out over charge/discharge cycles.

Extended Range does net higher HP numbers from the motors and if I recall correctly, also gets faster charge times. Still, for the average user, the standard range looks like the better deal.

The extended range battery also includes the 80A charge station pro in the price, which is a pretty good value!

The SR is certainly cheaper, but the ER adds not only the additional range, but also the additional onboard charger (1 per battery for a higher sustained charging rate) as well as the 80A home charger. Whether that combination is "worth it" or not is really a matter of personal opinion.

I agree with you, on principal, but there are LOTS of variables, here.

What is your normal use case? Does your grandma live 130 miles away, so the SR wouldn't make it without charging, but the ER would?

Are you doing lots of LONG trips, in which case the ER's range and charge rate would probably make it a substantially quicker trip?

SR = 44 minutes to add 150 miles
ER = 41 minutes to add 195 miles (or 31 minutes for 150 miles)

So, the ER would save you 13 minutes per stop.

Are you towing often, especially distances >100 miles?

Do you want or need the 80A bi-directional charger? Because it's included with the ER, but would cost maybe $1500 to buy for the SR, closing the price gap.

What will the resale be on SR vs ER? If ER has better resale, that may eat into the savings, too.

All that to say: I'm planning to get the SR because I think the Pro SR is the best deal by far. The XLT ER isn't worth anywhere near $20k more, to me. $10k for the Pro ER if it were available? Maybe. $7k for the ER if a higher trim? Maybe. $20k to go from Pro SR to XLT ER? No way.

I asked two friends with Teslas about the bigger battery.

One said the big pack is absolutely worth it. He is retired and road trips in his car. I did a 13 hour drive with him once and he is a mad man, driving fast until the battery runs down to zero. He owns a small vineyard and tows equipment with it.

The other is an office worker and said it is not worth it. He can only make it about 200 miles before he needs to take a half hour break anyway. He would put the money into the better autopilot so his commute is less painful. He drove from SF area to us on the Canadian border and took the scenic route, spent a couple days doing it.

My bladder range is about 2 hours also, and the SR seems fast enough. The Pro SR seems like an awesome deal, costs the same as a freakin Chevy Bolt. IMO next meaningful step up would be XLT+ or Lariat and you're spending waaaay more then.

Where you live is a big player in this too. If you live in Northern states you need to deal with winter range reduction which can take a big chunk.

I still think it's just a rumor about not being able to get the ER battery on the pro (general public). there has been no rock solid proof of this that I can find, just people on the internet making statements of such. Of course if it's on the net it must be true right? ?

Everything on Ford's website says it's available and does not stipulate JQ public or fleet only. Just says it's available.

If someone has a link from Ford that shows this is a definitive requisite for fleet to obtain. I'd like to see it.

The spec sheet with this information has been around for 3 months. A copy of it has been posted in this forum earlier.

That's my problem with the new lightning I'm not paying 20k more to get the higher horsepower and range any price over 55k isn't worth it to me and at that price range cyber truck is better

Everyone has made excellent points. Ford announced they want to do more online business than on the lot, but for the Lightning they are maximizing profit by forcing buyers into trims/equipment they dont want to get the features they do want. Even the pizza chain lets me totally customize my pizza. Why cant Ford say, here's the base model, pick your equipment preferences from our Ala-Carte list. When KBB values your car worth, you pick the options installed to value the vehicle worth. The truck I want will cost more than a current FX4 King Ranch or Raptor and still wont have BlueCruise. I havent bought a new vehicle in 9 years. Do people really put down $40k to $60k now to be able to afford the monthly payments ?

I think its less about trying to force buyers to a more expensive trim and more about controlling production costs. In general, production is more costly the more trims, configurations(or options) you offer. Its no surprise that Ford is trying to keep the cost production to a minimum given the price point. (As we've discussed at length before, the margins are going to be thin on the Lightning..esp at the lower trim level).

In addition, having multiple options/configurations slows down the number of vehicles Ford can turn out in the short term. I'm sure they want(need) to get as many vehicles out the door to start getting a decent ROI.

I remember a time when you could choose dozens of options, engines, axle ratios, bed lengths, etc. That has slowly been disappearing over time, most obvious with the imports(Toyota, honda,, etc). Many years ago they started making the options few and the trim levels determined what you got.
