Admiration while driving from others

I thought (hoped) we’d have a lot of admiration while driving and so far haven’t been disappointed.

We spent Saturday at a car show (didn’t win for 1980’s and newer car or truck with our Bolt or lightning) and we (@LightningMcQueenAlbany and I) spent the day talking up our EVs and had a lot of great comments and questions, a few very jealous guys, and a lot of photos taken of the new truck (and only a few idiots who were anti EV).

While driving so far though:
Test drive from the dealership a guy pulls up next to us excited and frantically waving his hand to roll down the window. First Lightning he’s seen in the wild.

Day after we got it was driving and got a thumbs up from a guy with a big excited look on his face.

More than a few times gotten a lot of excited looks from others but tonight takes the cake.
Driving with Blue Cruise enabled (man Ford needs to get the lane centering fixed so we don’t get pulled over and given a breathalyzer) and I see an ID4 coming up behind us. As they pass there’s an about 12 year old in the passenger seat, eyes wide open, smiling ear to ear, just enamored with seeing the truck. Pretty sure we made his week.

Anyone get some more than normal looks of admiration while out and about?

I've had the opposite experience, which is why I like the Lightning. I am pretty sure 99% of people don't know it's not just a F-150. I prefer to blend in, rather than to stick out. Only when I open the frunk do I get the occasional glances and one time this caused two guys to approach and ask me about the truck.

I've had people talk to me about the few Rivians in my area they see driving by, completely unaware I too have a EV truck.

One day while driving our Mach-E on the highway, an F-150 pulled up and the passenger excitedly pointed towards the Mach-E telling the driver and rear passenger (child) what it was. We waved back, and they pulled in front.

We pulled into the left lane and hit the pedal, zooming to 90+ quickly, then pulled back in a few cars ahead. A few minutes later they pulled up even with us, and both passengers were looking over and grinning. I think the adult was more excited than the kid.

We usually find other Mach-E drivers are mostly clueless and just drive past without a wave or a look.

Not really looking for attention though.

This has been my experience. General folks have no clue it’s an EV.

Some truck owners notice and are generally not impressed.

My favorite is getting chewed out for parking at a charger, L2 at an office. I was told it’s an EV spot, I need to move my truck. They pulled in next to me to continue while saying the cord wouldn’t reach at that spot, not their fault if the cord scratches my truck, etc.

In the midst of getting yelled at I walked over and plugged it in.

Kudos to them for doubling down. Hybrid or not those things are gas guzzlers. And I shouldn’t be taking up a charger if I can just go and get gas down the street (they had a hybrid).

I popped my frunk and rummaged around. I grabbed a bag of my ratchet straps and moving blanket I keep in the subfrunk . Didn’t need them, but I had nothing else to grab from the frunk as it was empty and put them both inside the truck. To emphasize I took my work bag and threw it in the frunk and walked away.

I have to admit it was mildly amusing to me.

Some people don’t even realize EVs exist. And many others who do have no idea the lightning exists. I’m enjoying educating those who are clueless.

I currently have a Tesla Model Y. I get comments from people working drive-thru's or when doing online order pick up at a grocery store. I think that is mainly because the people working those jobs are late teens or early twenties. Tesla is like a dream car to them. My 6 year old son gets a kick out of it, and is sad that that probably won't happen when we switch to the Lightning. I am hoping for a CyberTruck after the Lightning, so that will turn heads again.

I find 99% of people have no idea it’s an EV. The other 1% are super excited to see one, it’s usually the first one they’ve seen. Most folks think it’s awesome. The EV ignorant folks are generally like “WTF, where’s the engine?” when I pop the frunk.

I’ve had several contractors swing by while I’m fast charging to ask questions about it. These guys are really curious about it. I think Ford’s marketing department is definitely catching their attention.

I’ve had a couple random people walk by and shout “f$&# EVs” while pretending I’m not standing there next to the truck. It takes all kinds I guess

Yep, takes all kinds. For the most part the genuinely curious outweigh the others.

I’m in SoCal and I get nothing. Really need to be driving something special to stick out around all the exotics rolling around. I’m with the others… I like to blend in.

One fellow driving a F150 through the HD parking lot gave me a thumbs up.

I am in the crowd that believe most people are clueless.
I traded a 2019 F150 Platinum when I got my Pro. Both trucks are the same color. Neighbors don't even know I got a new truck. One asked me if I was about ready for a new truck, because he knows I update vehicles frequently. I just told him I like the one I have, then I opened the frunk
