There's a brand new V4 Supercharger along my way to work. I've been avoiding it because though the 10' cables would be very handy for charging the Lightning, when I pass by it's usually full of taxis charging between their shifts. I'll try it today.

Not inclined to take "influencers" earning for clicks as a definitive source on anything technical.

Actually, no need to even stop by and try it - Tesla's own app in "Charge my other EV" mode gives a clear answer. This station, which is equipped with brand new V4 chargers, is offered as an option for charging my Lightning.

Currently on my way to Flagstaff AZ from Lake Tahoe and tried using my charger three times. Failed in Mammoth Lakes, Ca and just now in Barstow, Ca. I was successful in Lone Pine, Ca and at my local charger as a test in Tahoe. Not too happy and could have been stranded relying on the supercharger in Mommoth, but made it to Bishop luckily. Just curious if others are having the same hit and miss.
Thanks in advanced.
Edit: By the way, if anyone heading to Overland Expo in Flagstaff I’ll have my camper and truck inside the event with Four Wheel Campers. Stop by and say hi!

Thanks for reporting this issue. I'm planning a trip this summer from San Diego to Lake Tahoe and was going to take route 395. I was planning on using the "reliable" Tesla Superchargers exclusively and charging at Mammoth Lakes. With the elevation change and the Topaz Lake Superchargers not being designated V3s, Bishop to South Lake Tahoe becomes a challenge! May have to go up route 5 or the 99 instead.

You’re welcome. I don’t know if you have driven the 395 yet, but it’s a really nice drive especially after Lone Pine. I do it all the time. Charge in Barstow, Olancha, then Bishop and Bridgeport and you will make it to Tahoe easy. I will avoid relying on Tesla chargers until I test them.

I found the reverse. While Supercharging my Tesla I saw a station had Magic dock installed but wasn’t noted in the app as being Magic Dock or NACS compatible.

Came back next morning with the Lightning and an adapter to test it, Plug n Charge initiated. I got 161kW, charged for a min grabbed 1.4kWh and left…still waiting for a charge to actually hit the account, never got a charge summary email.

I have charged my F150 Lightning at Tesla Superchargers dozen times now. Yes, I am a road tripper and making the most of the membership.
  • It doesn't matter what PlugShare or ABRP says. If it's not shown in the TESLA app as NACS adapter compatible site, you can't charge there.
  • Do check PlugShare for recent charge experiences at your destination Supercharger. From my experience on the road, problems are a little more frequent now with the layoffs at Tesla.
  • Avoid crazy busy Supercharger locations, because you'll be waiting for 2 adjacent spots to open up.
  • Check, the Tesla app even if you just charged at a location yesterday. See picture. This has happened to me twice now at two different locations.

  • There are some areas where a V3 location is right nearby a V2 location. Don't get them confused. Use the addresses in the Tesla app when you do your navigation.

I have had a pile of failures at NACS chargers with both my Mustang and my Lightning. I will not rely on NACS chargers and will continue to use CCS1 chargers as first options.

At this point, I've had 5 successful charges out of 15 attempts, if I don't count the Lightning. I tend to not count the attempts with the Lightning (none successful) because I'm not certain my Lightning has had the proper software update.

Several times the problem was that the post was simply offline but neither the standard behavior of leaving the plug laying on the ground nor the app indicated that it was offline. And, of course, there are not external indications on the post itself. I've run into plugs with broken pins. I've had communication issues. I've had the post charge for a couple of kWh and then just disconnect for no clear reason.

My experience is that NACS stations are only "reliable" if you are willing and able to try every post at the station, and that's just not worth my time. For now they're useful as backup or if they're the only option on a drive I would like to do.
I have charged at 4 different Tesla locations with my Lightning, a total of 9 or 10 times. Zero failures. Not one. I charged at one Magic Dock location with my Mach-E. Worked great.

I am surprised that charging stations don't have a "nozzle returned" sensor. If you don't return the nozzle at a gas station the next person gets a free fill-up. EV chargers should do the same and slobs will soon learn the lesson.

I was surprised by the plugs laying on the ground or wrapped around the post. Talked to a friend who has been a long-time T owner and he said that's the standard to indicate to others that the post is down.

I have to believe the post informs the system when the plug has not been returned.

Here’s a pic of the V4 chargers (V3 power cabinets) I came across in S Cal. They’re all magic dock and you’ll see the pedestals are in the center of the parking spot. The cables are longer too. The location was horrible though. It was at the exit of a Burger King drive through so every 30 seconds someone was weaving their way through while trying to eat fries. trying to back in with a Lightning would be tight and towing and charging impossible

Oh, by the way, you might want to make it a habit to check the NACS power plugs. I've seen at least a couple with missing pins...

Confession to make! On the way back from Arizona and two for two now on Tesla superchargers working great. My confession is I looked up the Barstow charger that failed me on the way to AZ and I realized I went to the wrong one. So I will head to the right one and test it out. I will also re-test Mammoth Lakes tomorrow on the way back.

my brother charges his Rivian there... the last time I talked to him they didn't put the stall numbers on the chargers so it's hit or miss figuring out which one you are trying to use!

Most of us already know this, but for the ones who don't: you'll end up taking 2 spots at a Tesla supercharger unless you get the rightmost one. This upset Tesla owners at a coupe of chargers that I charged at and they were not happy even though there were open spots. I had to explain that there was no other way to charge and that still did not help. I'm very skeptical about taking my truck for a road trip over the upcoming long weekend for this reason. More people traveling = more chaos at chargers. For me at least, it's not worth getting into an argument with people over a trivial issue.

As for the charging experience, no issues. Charging speeds were between 140-150kW until 50%, 95-103kW between 50-80%, then drops to 44kW and I usually leave at this point. Charged mostly on PA turnpike (I-76) Used the Tesla app to initiate charge and am using the Ford adapter.
