I had a 2023 XLT SR with the tow tech package purchased from the original reservation list.
In the summer I rented a small 8' U-Haul ramp trailer to pick up a wood splitter that was about 65 miles one way from home in rural northern New England The truck had been performing as expected. I left with about 225 miles on the GOM (100% charge ) and arrived at the dealer with about 160 miles showing. Figuring I could easily make it home I took off and the range immediately dropped to 60 miles. The total load was around 1000-1200 pounds.
Then the low battery warning came on the screen. There were no chargers anywhere near my route. This was the first time towing with the EV. I was really shocked that this load was affecting the range that much. I managed to locate a level 2 Chargepoint destination charger in parking lot behind a ball field and spent an hour trying to set up an account. Finally got it to work and after 90 minutes charging all it got was 6 miles of range. I decided to go for broke and made it home with less than 10 miles left on the GOM. A 3 hour trip took all day.
A few weeks later I picked up a small dump trailer with exact same results, 2/3 range loss under load.
The truck was always parked in an insulated heatable garage, never fast charged, always plugged in in winter and preconditioned. Always charged to 80-85%. It was never driven over 65 mph and was only used for local errand running about 60 miles per week. Heat was never set above 60.
Then I got the battery control module recall from Ford. After the dealer replaced it they apparently reinstalled the software and from that point on the truck would never charge beyond 200 miles. A 80% charge showed 170 miles. The dealer said it would improve in warmer weather but it never did. Resetting the history did nothing. It was little more than a errand runner that could not go more than 75 miles from home without charging and could not even tow a lawn mower 50 miles.
After 18 months with 5000 miles on the OD I was fed up and decided to trade it in. The original dealer offered 35k, a 40% hit in one model year. I went to different dealer and got 39k toward a 24 Flash. I still wanted an EV and like driving the truck. I have had the Flash since August. It has 800 miles on the OD. I will never tow anything with an EV ever again.
Other issues are insurance premiums, a $500 registration fee and repair costs. I clipped a mirror on the garage door on the xlt. Cost $1500 to replace. Overall I wonder if it is all worth it.

sw engineering manager,
A: The GOM is likely not going to be accurate when towing a trailer it has never towed before.
B:The range is about 1/2 when towing. Maybe 100 miles on an SR. Plan accordingly.
C: Sounds like there was some additional issue with your battery.

That sounds really bad, what kind of miles per KW were you getting? I've towed Uhaul covered trailers and was getting around 1.8-2 miles per KW. I get around 1.6-1.7 towing a 3500 lb travel trailer (granted it's a trailmanor so it doesn't get caught by the wind as much as other trailers). I've got a Pro with an SR battery also, so it's pretty much the same as yours.

I just towed our 3,800lb single-axle camper down to the Florida Gulf for a few beautiful days, about 250 miles each way... and enjoyed every moment of it in my PRO with Standard Battery pack...

I averaged about 1.1-1.2 mi/kwh since I drive conservatively while towing... and had plenty of DC Fast Charging options all along the way, with 3 being Tesla's...

I'm an insurance agent, and I don't see any difference between 'these' EVs and any other vehicle, pricing wise. New Vehicles ARE expensive, no matter how you look at it, and insurance will follow that.

Registration is different from state to state, as mine is only $20 per year, but you have to ALSO know that Georgia charges an UP-FRONT 7% TAVT Fee is first registered. Every state will handle this differently, but they don't charge 'more' just because it's an EV, but they may charge an extra 'Road Fuel Tax' since we don't pump gas, and therefore don't pay our share of those taxes, otherwise.

Maintenance is a real joy with our EV trucks: just had my 50,000 mile 'check up' at the Ford dealer, the FIRST time this amazing truck has graced the doors of ANY dealer or shop, and the tech really had almost NOTHING to do, really. Eyeballing things is about all it amounts to. No oil change. No fluid changes. Nothing but a tire rotation. Even the brake pads were 'almost' like new.

Crazy how we see things so differently. I'd buy another in a heart beat. I'd tow tomorrow if you need me to : )

So if we have this right, your truck was so bad you took a big hit and bought another one...

To indulge that lunacy just a little, you didn't have 60 miles of range. You had an uncalibrated trailer and a guesstimate. You'd probably have made it back, particularly in summer. Regardless, we'll never know.

Either way this does bring to mind the old joke about the two old ladies having lunch. "The food here is absolutely terrible!", says one. "Yes", says the other, "and the portions are too small"

I'm going to rant again about having a minimum posting history to start a thread. This is all information that is available using the search function at the top of the page.

There seems to be a contingent of Lightning buyers who don't make an honest assessment of their vehicle needs before purchase; when they get buyer's remorse they come here to vent. Either that or the Boyz over at brodozer.com are trolling us.

@Everett, what do you hope to accomplish with this thread? This is a Lightning enthusiast website. You don't need to tell us about the downsides of en electric pickup truck. We know what they are and have decided the upsides outweigh the downsides.

Do people go to train enthusiast websites and complain that train travel is slow and outdated? Yeah, they probably do.☹

This thread started life in GENERAL node, I moved it to TOWING and informed our new member that he will find tons of other threads on the topic of reduced range when plugging in a trailer.

Folks joining this and thousands of forums seldom follow the conventions of lurking, reading and posting in appropriate sections.

This happens at the Harley forum I participate in as well, it's maddening, but here I am.

My reading comprehension may be lacking, but I don't understand the logic of this one at all. Here's what I'm understanding:
1. You bought a Lightning.
2. You hate it because of towing range.
3. You traded it for---wait for it....
3. ....Yet another Lightning (taking a huge financial hit) and THEN
4. You swore off towing with any EV including your new Lightning with ER
5. And finally, AFTER buying your 2nd Lighting (that you now refuse to tow with) you randomly toss out the high cost of insuring basically the same vehicle that you've been insuring for the past year. I'm dizzy 😵

I fully expected to story to end with something semi logical like "...So I traded that POS Ford Lightning for a 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Duramax" What am I missing? 🤷‍♂️

Here is a Ford factory chart that was on display at the dealer. Shows the percentage of mileage loss when comparing in truck payload weight and towing.

As you can see, a fully loaded truck bed still gets 93% of the rated range. While a fulled loaded trailer 10,000# only got 34% of it's range.

This feels like a troll’s post.
New user who tried to hit every talking point.
The guy didn't even know he had a $500 deductible.
He got $39k for a used xlt SR, that's actually pretty good.

I think he'll be quite happy with his flash.

He'll probably never return. I think he was saying his state charges a $500 registration fee for EVs. My initial thought is, "that sucks," but when taking into account rational thinking and the tone of the rest of the post I'm guessing his registration fee including the EV charge is $500...or close to $500... probably $375.🤣

When people have concerns about range they need to post the observed efficiency (mi/kwh). The GOM is even more useless when towing.
