I had a 2023 XLT SR with the tow tech package purchased from the original reservation list.
In the summer I rented a small 8' U-Haul ramp trailer to pick up a wood splitter that was about 65 miles one way from home in rural northern New England The truck had been performing as expected. I left with about 225 miles on the GOM (100% charge ) and arrived at the dealer with about 160 miles showing. Figuring I could easily make it home I took off and the range immediately dropped to 60 miles. The total load was around 1000-1200 pounds.
Then the low battery warning came on the screen. There were no chargers anywhere near my route. This was the first time towing with the EV. I was really shocked that this load was affecting the range that much. I managed to locate a level 2 Chargepoint destination charger in parking lot behind a ball field and spent an hour trying to set up an account. Finally got it to work and after 90 minutes charging all it got was 6 miles of range. I decided to go for broke and made it home with less than 10 miles left on the GOM. A 3 hour trip took all day.
A few weeks later I picked up a small dump trailer with exact same results, 2/3 range loss under load.
The truck was always parked in an insulated heatable garage, never fast charged, always plugged in in winter and preconditioned. Always charged to 80-85%. It was never driven over 65 mph and was only used for local errand running about 60 miles per week. Heat was never set above 60.
Then I got the battery control module recall from Ford. After the dealer replaced it they apparently reinstalled the software and from that point on the truck would never charge beyond 200 miles. A 80% charge showed 170 miles. The dealer said it would improve in warmer weather but it never did. Resetting the history did nothing. It was little more than a errand runner that could not go more than 75 miles from home without charging and could not even tow a lawn mower 50 miles.
After 18 months with 5000 miles on the OD I was fed up and decided to trade it in. The original dealer offered 35k, a 40% hit in one model year. I went to different dealer and got 39k toward a 24 Flash. I still wanted an EV and like driving the truck. I have had the Flash since August. It has 800 miles on the OD. I will never tow anything with an EV ever again.
Other issues are insurance premiums, a $500 registration fee and repair costs. I clipped a mirror on the garage door on the xlt. Cost $1500 to replace. Overall I wonder if it is all worth it.
