Electrek BYD article

Surprised that nobody posted a link to this story yet. It was linked in my Google News page today. I sure hope that this tech can go global.
No excitement because this is a program announcement. I.e., we have decided to develop a 1000V platform with 1MW charge rate." That doesn't mean they have such a system, nor does it imply they have a high chance of success.

Ok, so where is all this nuclear power suppose to come from?
Right now drawing 40 amps level 2 is a stress on our grid here locally with approx 6 homes on a single transformer.

I don't even bother selling tankless electric water heaters as they tend to require 6-60 amp breakers. Not going to happen without major infrastructure upgrades. Now try getting all this extra power needed to make commercial locations work. There is a 16 stall supercharger location in my neighborhood that's been waiting over 2 years to get the go ahead to cut up the street and run 1/4 mile to a DWP substation.

One Small Modular Reactor is about 300MW. That is a 300-bay fast charging station with 1MW charge rates. If we are to electrify transportation that is what a highway fuel station will look like. With a restroom, Dunkins and a Panera.

Sounds to me like it's fully developed and ready to roll out:

"BYD plans to change that with its new “Super E-Platform,” which has officially been unveiled and offers 1,000V and charge rates up to 1,000 kW."

It can have different types of solutions. One is drawing power at near maximum rate the existing grid is capable of and fill in the local power banks at the charging stations for a quick high energy zap. Power banks could be filled up at night or during day when EVs are not using the maximum power available to that location. The larger the power bank, the more of these BYD's it can handle simultaneously. I have a feeling you will be paying more for this kinda juice to pay for the power banks.

It will be a long time before all EVs are like this BYD at all stalls in one location. By then, grid would be more capable too. Keep in mind if every EV could fill up in 10 minutes, there will be less of a chance to max out a location so when no one is there, power bank can fill up. If traffic of these BYDs is high and powerbank remains empty, your navigation app could add to your expected travel time.

I'm not sure any SMNRs will be able to wind up and down fast enough. I think they're still a base load solution.

I'm basically a skeptic too, and you may be right. But there are a lot of indicators that this is more than just an idea in the works. Maybe bad translation? 🤷‍♂️

As promised last Friday, BYD held a livestream event at its headquarters in Shenzen, China, where it officially unveiled its new 1,000V Super E-Platform, capable of charging 1MW+ (1,000 kW) rates. Per its Weibo post (translated from Chinese):

BYD officially releases flash charging battery with ultra-high voltage of 1000V, ultra-large current of 1000A and ultra-large power of 1000kW, achieving global mass production of megawatt flash charging with the highest peak charging speed of 1 second and 2 kilometers, completely solving users’ charging anxiety when traveling.

They are only 300MW and no-CO2, I think a plant like that can always be dispatched, even at night when less cars are fast charging (and solar is off line) 300MW transmission lines are manageable.

"Global mass production?" Has anyone seen one, anywhere? Press releases often contain exaggerations, but the Chinese ones (translation?) Are particularly bad.

Charging at 10C....I hope the battery tech can handle that. Current tech would crumple in a couple years at that rate.
