Update: I just sent tons of email printouts (Ford, Sunrun, Delta engineers, AEE), screenshots, text messages, receipts, purchase orders to a consumer protection attorney. They are digging through the information now.

I have a second home where power outages are common. I purchased my 2022 Lightning (with the extended battery) after Ford started heavily marketing the Home Integration System. I would not have purchased the Lightning if Ford did not offer the Home Integration System. Having said that, I love the truck with the exception of the now completely unreliable FordPass app. It is so odd, the app actually performed great until about a month ago and now it is a mess.

I have spent over 2 years working with Ford to get the HIS working reliably. First let me say that it has never worked when I actually needed it, but it has worked occasionally when I have done simulated power outages. Each time I get fooled into thinking that maybe, just maybe it will work reliably. I have made dozens and dozens of phone calls to the Battery Electric Vehicle group and spent countless hours doing everything that has been asked.

Today was the last straw for me. I give up. I simply cannot believe that Ford has allowed this to continue. I even saw an ad on TV today where it showed a Lightning powering a home. Ford needs to contact every customer who has an HIS (there are not that many) and come up with a solution or a resolution. For me now, buy my truck back and refund the cost of HIS equipment and installation.

For anyone thinking about buying a Ford Home Integration System. Do not even consider it.

That is a very familiar number 🙁 866-631-3788. I assume that calling and discussing a buyback would only lead to greater frustration. I love my Lightning and I do not believe that there is a better EV truck on the market. Having said that, the HIS will not power my home reliably during a power outage and a backup power source requires reliability or is is worthless and potentially dangerous. Ford needs to seriously address this.

Realistically, what recourse do we "actually" have? I have already been on my local Ford dealers website looking at 2025 F150s (not Lightning) but I am sure that I can't stomach the trade-in offer that I will get on the $80K plus tax and license that I paid.

I’ve already tried that “I want a buyback” bs. They denied it.

No doubt that the bar is so high that clearing it would be virtually impossible. Now that I have given up on the Home Integration System, plan B will be to power the house reliably using the 240V 30amp outlet in the truck bed. Certainly not as convenient, but if it works, at least I will have access to the Lightning's 131 kWh battery. In hindsight, I could have saved myself a lot of money, frustration and countless hours on the phone.

The buyback process opens the door to a few options.

First, it assigns you a Ford caseworker to review the issues, what's been done, and they attempt to escalate and resolve your issues.

Should that fail to fully resolve your issue, you might then wind up with another worker from the Required Vehicles Team. They have the power to either make you whole and take the vehicle and it's associated components back, or to offer you a cash settlement to live with it.

It sounds like in your case, a settlement for the value of the HIS and installation, as well as the reduced functionality of the truck to perform that task, is what you're after.

The worst they can do is to tell you to pound sand.

I disagree- I live in an area that loses power fairly frequently and the home backup part is fantastic. It is much quieter than a generator (and much easier to start), and I don’t have backup batteries just sitting there doing nothing. I am of an age where men really can die of heart attacks trying to start balky motors with year old gas in them, and hauling the generator uphill in snow is no fun. It is really nice to just plug into my transfer switch (from the bed outlet), flip the switch, and go back to bed.
You are disagreeing but factually incorrect.

You are not using HIS, you are manually plugging your truck into the house and flipping the transfer switch. That has worked from day 1.

Yep and that is what I would recommend Patagonian here do. Works great to keep the fridge and a couple lights going during an outage.

Oh crap! New Flash buyer here. I just found out that my Charge Station Pro can't power my house and I need to buy the extra Home Integration System that is $3,895 and can be ordered at the Sunrun website.

I know right? That’s what I’m doing with my second house. I’m avoiding fords BS and after buying a new lightning, a new Mach e and having my mom get a new maverick, I think we are done with new vehicles from them.
