Honestly, the gas engine to charge the battery and extend the range between charges would make sense on a large inefficient vehicle like a truck that needs to tow or haul long distances.

Not sure it adds much benefit on a smaller car or SUV other than making people feel better making the transition to EVs, which in itself is also a net positive.

CAPEX has been spent. EV’s are here to stay. The adaption rate just slowed a little.
We are most likely at a non growth plateau at best for at least the next few years.

Just my opinion but if the US automakers don’t get their act together on EVs China is going to take over as the world leader in auto production
Our window of opportunity is closing quickly
Then the US taxpayers will be bailing out the big 3 automakers
We should not stick our heads in the sand.
The time is now

I'm afraid that ship of opportunity has already sailed.

Very interesting. However, having a gas tank when a Russian tank is hauling ass trying to get to your out of juice truck makes sense. Carrying an ICE engine and associated junk in District of Columbia, ..... not so much.

I don’t know sometimes you need an suburban assault vehicle just to get through traffic and go to the store!

I think we will eventually get BC 1.4.

In 9 or 10 years!
Once the technology matures, NHTSA will see it as a safety feature. They will view it as ChatGPT driving 500 million vehicles as being safer than 500 million people driving 500 million vehicles.
When automated self drive fully happens, it will be in all vehicles. Right now we are the lab rats.

I don't understand the correlation of the article posted to the title of this thread. If anything, this means that Ford will be required to update the software as a recall. I don't think 1.4 was even out when these accidents occurred. Maybe 1.4 already has improved things and if so they want to get it out asap. I haven't got my update yet but hasn't a large portion of lightnings already received the update? Has anyone heard that the update process has been stopped because of this?

Most of us have not received the OTA yet, a few testers have it, while other members did some FDRS downloads and forscan tweaking.

Everything else is mere speculation about the future based on an investigation.

IMHO, Ford isn't stopping, they're perfecting the system.

"The agency said these vehicles seem to have system limitations relating to the detection of stationary vehicles while traveling at highway speeds and in nighttime lighting."

Heck I could've told them that. Even 100% sunny i wouldn't trust it approaching stopped traffic at speed.
From my observations the Human Driven Vehicles suffer from the same system limitations!

True. I'd take a driverless tesla over a lot of the people on the road.
The Tesla self-driving is spectacular. I used it in the city in heavy traffic. It was able to make a left turn from a stop sign across two lanes of heavy traffic that had the right-of-way. It chooses when to overtake and adjusts for construction zones. It definitely drives better than my wife, and might even be better than me at gaging distances.

It is definitely nerve-racking to hand the trust over to it, but it delivers well.
