I've been experiencing a strange issue with my Lightning, and I'm wondering if anyone has encountered something similar.
Vehicle Info:
The Issue: My best guess is due to thermal expansion and contraction, my driver door electronic latch detection system malfunctions, leading the vehicle to indicate that the driver door is open (even though it's actually closed).
When It Happens: Initially, I noticed this issue during winter cold fronts in Florida. The App would alert me in the morning that my alarm had been triggered earlier that morning. In the hotter months, I've found that parking my vehicle with the driver side facing West (into the Sun, I'm in Florida) during the afternoon triggers the issue (the vehicle pointing North in this situation).
Video: Here is a quick, poorly shot video (turned gif) showing the issue. During this clip the touchscreen displayed 93F.
The panning back and forth is to show that the door is 100% closed yet the Instrument cluster still indicates the driver door ajar.
Consequences: Most of my interactions with this occur while I am at work and the vehicle is parked. I do not believe I have seen it happen while it is being charged or plugged in.
Issue Resolution: Most of the time, this issue resolves itself. When it happens at work, it will resolve itself after driving about 3 or 4 miles on my way home.
Conclusions Drawn: Given that it occurs with the few cold fronts and heat of Florida, I'm guessing it has something to do with thermal expansion and contraction. This would also explain it "resolving" itself either by waiting it out, or having it "cooled down" by the wind while driving.
Service History: I have taken it to my Ford dealer multiple times for the recalls and general service. This specific issue is mentioned and I am told they do look into it.
From Memory:
I'm hoping to be able to reliably reproduce the issue so I can demonstrate it to them and assist in finding a solution.
However, aside from parking and waiting hours, I haven't found a way to trigger it.....yet.
I am planning on heading out with a hair dryer and seeing what I can make happen before going to my upcoming service appointment.
Help:
Thank you for coming to my TED talk and potentially assisting.

- If it happens and the vehicle is then driven:
- Upon coming to a complete stop, the Emergency brake will be applied due to the safety protocol being triggered.
- Note: I only use one-pedal driving.
- Upon coming to a complete stop, the Emergency brake will be applied due to the safety protocol being triggered.
- If parked and locked prior to malfunction:
- The alarm will be triggered, indicating that the driver door is open.
- I have been notified by co-workers that my alarm is going off.
- I have left work, walked to my truck and found the lights flashing, but the horn has stopped.
- I'm not sure at what point the horn hits a timeout during the alarm, but I have no idea how long it would have been going off.
- The alarm will be triggered, indicating that the driver door is open.
- If the malfunction occurs, the vehicle is driven and then parked:
- The vehicle cannot be locked or armed until the issue resolves itself.

- First time: I was told they realigned the latch.
- Second time: I was told they replaced the latch.
- Third time: I was told they believed they fixed it, but it happened again the same day.
- Fourth time: Upcoming service for a recall, and they will re-examine this issue.

- Maybe you can point me in the right direction?
