2022 Lightning XLT SR
Wanted to say hello and thanks to anyone who’s posted to the wealth of information here. I scoured these forums for about a year before I pulled the trigger on a used XLT a couple of weeks ago. I suspect it was formerly used as a local government vehicle or by a company that rarely used it as a truck, as the window sticker included a fleet graphic package. It’s sitting at 37k miles, the interior is immaculate including the carpeting in every observable area, and there’s barely a scratch in the bed liner. It surprisingly came with a Lectron supercharger adapter (these are safe to use, right? I heard something about a recall..) and even had the door code card in the glovebox (I was worried about having to strip back panels to find this). I feel like I lucked out.

It has almost every feature I was looking for: the 9.6kW Pro Power, max tow/tow tech package, bed scales, tailgate step (goofy but surprisingly useful), even the front camera sprayer. The only option I’d highly consider adding aftermarket would be adaptive cruise. I’ve looked at several tutorials and I think I would feel comfortable doing it, up until the Forscan part. While I’ve extensively read about what this program can do, and have a list set aside of tweaks I’d like to make to the vehicle, I’m very hesitant to alter the software on this truck.

I’ve already run into some hiccups. I’ve had to reset the infotainment screen twice due to no audio/carplay connectivity issues. I got the window bounceback update today and let it update before leaving for an appointment, only to find that my power was limited to around 63% even after a power cycle. This resolved after parking at the appointment for about 20 minutes, and I had read about this occurrence so I was aware of the chance that I’d experience it, but it still shook my confidence in the vehicle a bit.

Other than those small issues, I have absolutely loved driving this truck. I’ve started taking the long way home from work, and also just “going out for a drive” at times since it’s costing me a fraction of what it did with my 3rd gen Tacoma. So I’d have to say my experience so far has been 95% positive. My worry is that getting into Forscan mods might cause me more stress than it’s worth. I know the risk is incredibly low, and that you can make/restore backups at any time (I would be meticulous about this), but I will still probably wait a good while before attempting anything in that realm.

One last thing that’s causing me a bit of stress: I specifically wanted an XLT or higher trim for the work area, but this requires folding the shifter down. I’ve probably done this five or so times, but I’ve come across so many threads about unresponsive shifters and the truck needing a tow due to this issue. It makes me wonder if there’s a finite amount of times I could fold it down before finding myself in the same situation. My thoughts on that are either to just do it almost daily and try not to think about it, or do the rotary shifter mod and never have to worry about it again. Or maybe keep a rotary shifter in the glove box so if it happens to me, I have a way to get home. Ha.

Anyway, just wanted to share my thoughts after my first few weeks with the truck. I think it’s going to be an amazing vehicle that fits my needs extremely well. I just want to feel a little less stressed about it. Maybe I should stop reading the posts about broken things.

Glad you are enjoying it so for. Don't let FORScan scare you too much. Just be VERY careful about making the changes you intend to do. And backup any module you change before making any changes. I've done several changes on my Flash (default to 24 hour clock, enable silent mode, change seat belt warning to the European model, and change headlights to be in whatever mode you left them (off normally) instead of forcing them to Auto). Easy enough to do.

I concur with @K6CCC on FORScan. You're not changing the software but rather the parameters that the software uses to decide things. If you look at the source spreadsheet, there are endless options but I don't recall any that say "disable truck*". ;)

Hopefully you found the new thread I started with tested mods for the Lightning. Avoid mods from FB or ICE forums. Start with an easy Sync mod like changing the parameter that enables the Silent (campground) Mode slider. Feel free to DM me with what you see for your current values so we can verify the specific value to write. Or send me your VIN and I can get your current values from the Ford site.

I personally like the glare-free and the European seat belt strategy.

* - if there are, then stay away from those!

You don't have to reset the system for no-audio carplay. Unfortunately, the no-audio carplay thing happens a lot.

To fix it:

Go to the settings -> phone list screen and turn off carplay for the phone, then re-enable carplay for the phone.

For your car play issues, search the forum for this: TSB 25-2048

See if that TSB covers your model and year. While you are at it, update your profile to show the year model of your truck and maybe the location of where you are. If you share your location, people can come help you with ForScan or FDRS.

I added the adaptive cruise and lane centering to my 24 Pro. It is a worthwhile mod even though it took me a while to work through my errors. The ForScan part is the easiest. If you are thinking about it, I would recommend that you do it.

I echo what everyone has already said about ForScan. There is plenty of help available on this forum and it can enable some really cool mods on the truck. As long as you make backups you can always fix your errors or return your truck stock.

I will concur with the previous posts!
I have personally bricked my truck with FDRS while doing the IPMA update without a proper power supply! I was able to recover after getting a better one and then broke down and bought the proper one. I mentioned this because this is the software that Ford techs use. I have never had any problem using Forscan. I am just extra cautious when using it and making sure that I am doing it correctly and double checking, etc. kind of like the old adage measure twice cut once.

Welcome to the forum, many of us are happily enjoying our Lightnings with few or minor issues not worth stressing over. As I look at many new and ongoing threads about issues & troubles it does get a bit overwhelming, but I rejoice in the positive experience posts and threads when they happen.

Don't stress on all the issues you read, our XLT's have been fine and what common issues there have been Ford has fixed via recall/TSB. The more PIA issues have been on the Lariat but not related to it being an EV it's been the common parts with any F150 Lariat/Platinum (mainly LED lights and bumper sensors). For this reason I've put the 120,000 mile "Premium" extended on the Lariat - on the XLTs just the base factory.

The only EV specific issue in 120,000 cumulative miles was an oil pump in front motor of the Pro @ 200 miles... I'll put that down to factory defective. We did have 12 volt issues on our first trucks however Ford changed the programming no issues since.

This is reassuring. I went back and forth the other day on purchasing an extended warranty through Granger, but I think I’ll just put the money I would have spent on that each month into savings.

The issues have been water, water, and oh yea water.

Old fashion heat generating bulbs have a way of dealing with condensation that leds don't. If I was in a climate where freezing isn't an issue I'd let it ride. But when that half full of water lens in running boards turns into an ice cube expensive things happen.

Now would I spend $2500 to replace the running boards... no some silicone and a drain hole...

I am not sure this is a Lighting only issue. This happens to me in other cars. I think it might also have to do with Apple. But it does happen too much in the Lightning IMO. However, there's a very quick fix I found.

Swipe down on your phone and toggle off the wifi. You will get a notice on your phone that you are going to disconnect carplay. Then on the info screen in the Lightning, you will not see carplay, you'll see a blue screen with a big button on the right to click to connect a phone. Click it, tap your phone, and tap carplay. The phone will turn wifi back on and connect and the sound will work. Works every time for me.

Think of it as a very good truck with a Commodore 64.

Welcome to the club! I saw your truck earlier today (a White Lightning Lariat). Enjoy the vehicle, it's the best one I've ever owned!
