Just got my 10k mile check up this morning at 10,450 miles. Everything was fine, according to the dealer. This afternoon, orange wrench of death for the powertrain/loss of power.

I have an OBD scanner plugged in at all times. Scanned it multiple times and no errors appear.

I have a road trip tomorrow. Should I cancel and go into the dealer?
Let her rest for an hour, did you get an OTA today?

Before taking off on a road trip, check to make sure you can charge the battery (level 2 is ok) without generating an error. One sign of a battery module problem is an inability to charge and the charging indicator ring turning red (instead of blue or white). If that happens, take an ICE and drop the truck off at your dealer.

Thanks. It was down to 37% earlier and I have had it charging off and on at home on lvl2 up to 65% before going to pick up kids. Haven't seen an issue with that yet.

Got the error last night. Charged stopped at 65% today with an error (at home). 23 Lariat. No dealer open in my area today. I did call the BEV number and opened a case. Two dealerships that are close to me (Atlanta area) are Angela Kruse ford Billy Howell. I bought through Angela Kruse, but frankly was not impressed with my service experience there. I am going to try Bill Howell. Any dealer recommendations (or horor stories) in Atlanta area are much appreciated.

This prompted my buy the Ford ESP from Grainger..
Pugmire Ford in Carrollton has an excellent service department. I didnt buy my truck from them but they sure did treat me like I did. Its the only Atlanta area dealership I have found to be competent.

Yeah I'm doing additional research and I'd be fairly upset if it was didn't qualify because I was 2 days and 224 miles over.
Ford got back to my Lemon Law lawyers today. Offered $4000 for breach of warranty, said it doesn't qualify for Lemon Law because of it 2 days and 224 miles past 2 years/24000 miles of ownership (NJ guidelines are 2 years/24000 miles). Not sure there's any other option then, lawyers seemed to think that was my best option. Any thoughts?

Finally able to charge to 100% before my trip yesterday. I turned on the truck, had the error pop up, upon hitting "OK" it cleared and no more wrench. Not sure if it was bc of the checkup that caused the wrench or not, but now it is something to keep an eye out for.

Thanks for all the replies!

Just got the "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power" warning pop up. First for this particular vehicle, but I've done this dance before with my prior '23 XLT. That one took 9 weeks to resolve and ended up with Ford taking the vehicle back. Hoping for a better outcome this time.

Fun fact - the vehicle knows it has a problem, Ford Pass knows it has a problem, but the Ford webserver thinks everything is fine...

Did you not have the first occurrence of this issue until after 2 years / 24000 miles? Or is this a second occurrence, with the first occurrence happening within the first 2y/24000?

First occurrence was within the 2 years/24000 miles at around 1 year/15000 miles, lasting I think 9 days. Second occurrence was the the 2 days/224 miles past and lasted 13 days.

So yes, first occurrence was before the NJ law limit, but didn't hit the 20 cumulative days until the second occurence. Originally they told me this wouldn't be an issue so I'm not sure what's changed.

Got the truck back after several weeks.

To recap:

November ‘24 - powertrain malfunction - module 3 replaced.

After replacement 100% charge would only show 280 miles on an ER battery. After a few miles the battery would drop to 80%. No service w

March ‘25 - Finally take truck in. Service manager tells me I need a new battery. I ask if it the entire pack, the response was yes.

April ‘25 - Pick up truck and only module 7 has been replaced.

Asked if there anything I need to do for a new module and was told no.

It's worth noting that at 100% charge 280 miles is totally correct for the ER. It will only say 320 miles if you reset your driving history, or are primarily driving in cities.

I’ve had the truck since Aug ‘22. 100% charge has always shown 310 miles, in the winter if it gets cold it might top out at 290. The truck has 30K miles and the driving history has been reset many times by me and several times by the dealer. In addition I have done several compete reset and disconnects from Ford Pass.

As you can see from the service ticket my below 300 miles at 100% charge was the result of a failed module (second one to fail). No dreaded wrench, no powertrain warning. The way I knew there was a problem, was no matter what I did I could never get the miles over 287, and when I drove the same 175 mile oneway trip twice a month, the battery would drain at a rate that was faster than my 2.5 years of experience driving the truck.
