Well, got a rude surprise today, when we went to public charging, plugged in, and the charger decided to stop charging the car at what it thought was 100%. The truck decided that 90% is the new target charge. So I'm missing a solid 50 miles of range that I actually need to get to where we're going.

I cannot find the setting on the truck screen, and the FP trash app setting won't let me change it (Android). So now I'm perplexed at how I get enough charge to get where I'm going. I have no slider in the app for the 1 time charge.

I just don't get it... I think Fords vehicle software group thinks its helping us, but each time there's the slightest change, it just gets more frustrating.

If you absolutely need 100%, I believe the one-time charge limit will do that. But charging from 90 to 100 is painfully slow, so it’s best to plan a second stop, if possible.

Thanks.. But I can't even find the 1 time charge limit setting. It wasn't visible in the FP app while charging, and I simply can't find the Charging part of Sync.

Charging is it’s own app on the “Home” screen.

As soon as you begin your public charging session take a look at the charging app on the sync APPS screen, the slider will be at the default 90% hit the + or swipe it to the right to increase the value then click save to store the new value.

The Lightning always defaults to 90% charge when using a DCFC. Why? Don't know. Our Mach-E will continue to 100% with no intervention.

Of course, the Mach-E doesn't have the option to set a one time charge limit. Very confusing why Ford's EV offerings differ so much in features.

Thanks everyone. Funny, I've owned the Lightning for more than 2 years, and not once did I have this issue until now. I never even knew there was a "charging app", as I generally ignore the Ford software at all costs as it seems to do more harm than good most of the time. Lord only knows why some configuration options are in the Sync settings, while others are in standalone "apps".

At least we can now warm the truck up on an ad hoc basis without having to set a dopey schedule in the mostly useless Fordpass app

Well, if we can only get more reliable public charging.....

Thanks for this TaxMan....I just encountered this yesterday as well.

I was charging at a supercharger before bringing our new travel trailer home, and I had planned to charge to 100%. Yes I know it is slow after 80%, and slow AF after 85%, but I had the time and the charger had tons of empty stalls. I wanted to get to 100% because I had 180kms of towing ahead of me, with a new trailer i had only test-towed for half that distance...on a slower highway.

Anyways....in the App, I had set the charge to 100%. Then I went inside an outdoor store that was closing down for some gear, and got the notification my truck hit 90% and stopped.

I checked the app, it was still set to 100%. I hit to try and start the charge again from the phone, no dice. Went into the truck and changed the Sync setting for 100% one time charge limit, and reconnected the charger, and didn't work again either.

Went to the trailer store, and while sitting there for 2+ hours of paperwork and shit, got my truck charging on a level 1 charger up to 92%, but was still frustrating to not get that 100% I was looking for. I got home with only 7% SOC...that extra 8% I was missing woulda been really nice!!

That all said...is this the best way around this?
  1. Park at charger,
  2. get charger connected and charging,
  3. go into the charging area of SYNC, and then change the one time limit there?

Does it not work if you change the one-time setting first, and then connect?

Thanks

I'm not certain it's been a while since I did DCFC session, I do not think the 100% button on the Fordpass app applies to the DCFC charging session limit, could be but I have never tested that method of operation.

Tried & true, is use the Sync App control to increase the default, it should work before or during the active session.

This whole affair is completely non sensical. I don't understand why the engineers at Ford think this is something that needs to even exist at all.

Its convoluted, confusing and unnecessary. All winter, when we needed to charge our Lightning, I had to remember to deal with this. Mach E, no problem.

Candidly, the Lightning seems to be a complete petri dish with software settings. They keep changing things all the time. Every week, the truck behaves differently. Sometimes, things work, other times, they are gone. Locks lock themselves, then don't. AC turns itself on, then doesn't. etc, etc

I've been an engineer in the software industry for more than 30 years and unfortunately know this behavior. The team at Ford can't seem to figure out that a motor vehicle needs to be consistent and reliable. If I put out software that behaved differently every day, we'd have no business.

Car aren't phones. If a phone changes behavior somewhere in the software or app, people will figure it out, but likely won't cause a deadly accident by a phone malfunction. When I go to use my 7000 pound F150 Lightning, I need it work the same every day.

So why can't you figure out how to use the truck? It's not an iPhone and it's not a Tesla but I can tell you after 2 years I've had no problems.
My charge schedule works great and everything else has been stable and functional.

Agreed. Do I wish some things worked differently? Sure. But I have no problem consistently executing normal functions.

My 80% limit seems to be ignored when my home location is not recognized (especially when Ford Nav shows the truck swimming in the ocean!) or anywhere else. Just goes to 100% if not caught in time. Also, if not recognizing Home and I stopped the charge at 80% but left it plugged in, then Departure time comes on, it started going to 100% again. Gotta get in for that CSP 25-2105 that updates the firmware of a lot of modules. But I am waiting for a notification of the battery modules ready for my Safety Recall 25S18 in this 2nd quarter, right?
