It is time for me to rotate my tires - which I do myself - but I have read conflicting instructions on the pattern.

Front 2 criss-cross to back and back forward to the front.

Is there a particular reason for this? What about just moving front to back and back to front on same side?

Thanks

Typically you cross them so you get the best wear out of them. By crossing them each tire ends up in each position on the vehicle.

The dealer did mine at 10k front to back, and I am going to have them cross them when it goes in for 20k this week.

I'm historically pretty easy on tires, and don't rotate them until I can see a difference from drive wheels to non-drive wheels. Mostly FWDs.

Now with a heavy full-time AWD with a stronger-than-average front bias, should I be more stringent about keeping to the 10K schedule? Any horror stories for AWDs using my prior approach? I'm not even sure which will wear faster here (and i am a touch curious). 😀

I'm at 11K and can't see any difference yet.

Because I didn't feel like pulling of the plastic aero covers that run most of the length of the frame rails, I just used two Jacks and some alternating of position to do the switch front to rear and across.

18,000 miles on mine and my tread depth is equal on all four tires. Equal from tire to tire and equal from inside to outside of each tire. First vehicle I've owned that has worn tires evenly.

I'm not rotating mine. You might get a tool at the auto parts store and check your tread depth before going to the trouble of rotating.

Question on Tire rotation for our Trucks. Should I have my tires rotated after 6 months even if I do not have over 5K miles on it?

Probably not. As stated above, best plan is to get a tread depth indicator for free or maybe $1 at an auto parts store, and check the depth. I have 18K miles in 18 months and have not rotated mine.

I have been rotating every 10k (24k today)and all 4 seem to have very even wear. I did see some edge difference on the front at 10k is why I followed that schedule. Tires have become much more expensive so trying to optimize.

This is the way I've been doing my f-150s for decades but here is what it says when I google our awd lightnings. Has our owners manuals been telling us the incorrect way? I think they are going by the 4wd old rotation way.

Here is what googlle says rotation should be....

I am not sure I trust google on this one, especially the "AI overview". Using this method the tires are only being rotated between two positions on the truck. With the old method that TNVolFan mentioned the tires rotate through all of the positions.

Can't imagine why anyone would ask AI how to rotate their tires. That rotation is NOT correct.

Manual is quite clear.

The fronts are crossed to the backs, and the backs are brought forward.
