I have a line on a 30a? Hardwired charger from a Mach-E. Should I buy it or did they have problems?

I just purchased a 2024 Lightning Flash and sadly up here in Canada it doesn’t come with a charger (although I was told it still did)

Is the older style round Ford Mach-E charge any good - the seller is asking $350 CDN.

I will purchase another charger in the future, maybe something more “current” 😀

Nothing wrong with a used charger. There’s no moving parts so if it looks like it was taken. Are of should be fine. But if you just got your truck ford has the new “power promise” so you should get a charger and install unless that’s not valid in Canada.

“unless that’s not valid in Canada”

The power promise program
was written about in Canadian publications but the fine print said Canada “may” adopt the program… No free charger north of the border - maybe in “May” 😀 😔

I’m on the look for a new one too - I have a Grizzl in a cart already but I’m still undecided.
Thanks for the advice.

A couple of thoughts, that picture looks like new one, is it a refurb? Is it perhaps new and not actually used?
Or grab a used one that comes with a one year warranty ...

That used 30 amp charger seems priced high. It would only charge at 24 amps, about 1/2 of what your Lightning is capable of.

For about the same money you could likely get an adjustable amp EVSE from Grizzle E or Emporia.

No real need for a "smart" charger since the truck can handle all the scheduling of charging times.

I bought a 40 amp charger at my local Goodwill Store several months ago for $80 and it has worked like a charm. My Lightning did not come with the $500 charger cable thank goodness.

This is from about 2017 and It is a bit of a gamble. You need to see the plug ends to see if there is any sign of melting or arcing. Contactors can also fail. I don’t know anything bad about this specific model, but Ford did shift to Webasto - who also ships with Hyundai and Kia.

I think it should be at a lower price, if you want a really good 30A from that era look for one branded “Clipper Creek” (now Enphase). The LCS-30 is no longer made, sadly, but it is simple and will get the job done.

Avoid Juicebox, you will see them but the company has stopped supporting them in the USA and the software no longer works (which is why I like ”simple.”)

That ancient Ford charger would be a good option if and only if (a) you're remodeling your garage with a retro theme and (b) you have experience repairing electrical and electronic devices. If not both, a new charger that would cost only slightly more would be a much wiser purchase. I've been using an Emporía for several years with no major problems; Grizzl-e and Enphase are recommended around here; there are other good ones out there for not much more than that used one.

Hope Ford comes through for you soon with a home charger deal. Getting a cheaper portable charger with a decent warranty in the meantime seems like a good option. I've been feeding my truck with a cheap no-name 16A charger connected to a dryer socket...until I get a covered parking space with a good quality charger set up. It works fine if one's daily drives aren't more than about 60 miles....or 100 km if you use those sensible units.

I managed to pick up an open box Chargepoint Home Flex with a J1772 handle on Kijiji for about 300 CAD. Yet to install but was a pretty good deal. Imo, nothing wrong with getting a 2nd or 3rd hand charger. No moving parts in EVSEs but make sure the plugs and cords are in good condition.

That being said, I'd pass on that old Mach-E charger and look up on FB marketplace or Kijiji and get a more robust EVSE. Especially if you plan on changing EVs or adding EVs in the future, get an EVSE that is modular. The Home Flex can be updated in the future to swap out the J1772 cable for NACS.

I'd be cautious, I read some bad reviews about the grizzl-e, about 50-50 split good bad reviews.
