Anyone know if this switch will work with the lightning as a generator backup. Or if there is a modification that could be done to make it work.

Probably not that one, it needs to be compatible with a GFI (it needs to switch neutral). I just had success with the Generac Homelink transfer switch - although my particular unit had a disconnected wire on the inside that I had to reattach to make the switch work properly.

That is unfortunate, the house we bought has the Reliance Controls Corporation 31406CWK 30 Amp 6-circuit Pro/Tran Transfer Switch Kit for Generators (7500 Watts) installed. I was wondering if I could plug the Lightning into the generator port in the garage (transfer switch is in our basement). Based on the replies it appears I would need to swap out the transfer switch with something else.

Possibly, but it doesn't hurt to try it either. Assuming you don't have to invest a bunch into a cable and all that, although you can likely reuse it after replacing the transfer switch, the truck will tell you quickly if there is a bonded neutral issue.

I would only go this route if you are likely up for replacing the transfer switch if it doesn't work as the cable you need to run to the inlet could be pretty expensive. But if your current set up uses like a 30 amp twist lock then your replacement transfer switch should still be good with the same.

Since this is already installed in the house, replacing it would be quite time consuming and expensive. While not the perfect solution, it can certainly be made to work safely for temporary emergency power. You would need to disconnect the ground pin inside the the inlet box. The inlet box should still be grounded. But the ground pin itself would be disconnected. Place a sticker or sign at the box that indicates you've done this.

The truck's GFCI will continue to protect the truck and the generator cable running to the house. The circuit breakers and other protection devices that already exist in the panel and the house will continue to protect the house and work as they always do normally. If you hook up a portable generator, it will also continue to work normally.

This is the same thing you would need to do if you were putting an interlock breaker to backfeed the entire panel. Several of us here have done this and it works perfectly. There are also several people here will Chat GPT a big long rambling reply about how the world will implode and everyone will die if you do this. They are wrong.
