Ok, this is the second long road trip I have done since getting the truck in 2023. and it relates to behavior noticed during charging.

I only use Tesla Supercharging since getting the adapter this year.

On 2 changing stops this past week, with temps in the 50's I plug in and go to 80% this gives me about a 50-mile Buffer to the next stop.

Immediately after unplugging the GOM drops 50 miles of added range before even getting on the road. I don't remember this happening on a trip I made earlier in the year and was wondering if anyone else had seen this and if it was something that happened from a software update.

I think the pattern I noticed was on DCFC it flips to rated miles no matter what. When L2 charging it keeps your estimated range, until you hit around 100% and then it flips to EPA again.

IIRC a few folks have noted similar, I don't remember which update or thread.

Use your SOC and current efficiency on the most recent trip segment ... assuming the road ahead is similar to guesstimate a realistic range, then plot course for next DCFC along your intended journey.

And the GOM has always been very optimistic at and above 80%

If you initiate navigation with the Ford nav, it will adjust the GOM. I’ve only seen it adjust downward. Anywhere from 30 - 60 miles drop on a 150 mile route.

Yup, it is weird. I have had it lose signficant ”range” just by adding a rest stop to the route that was literally yards from the freeway. You have to watch the battery percentage instead, which is not 100% accurate either. Don’t plan on going below 5%.

If I am on a road trip then I will watch the battery percentage and the trip miles/kWh. I know that if I am getting over 2MI/kWh I can get about 160 miles from 80% on my Standard range Lariat. This is actual mileage when I’m planning to go to another charger with a comfortable buffer, if I’m on the last leg I can go further. If the MI/kWh is lower then I will really start paying attention and slowing down (although it hasn’t ever been much lower yet.)

An OBDII reader is useful. Ford has an internal battery percentage that differs from the external battery percentage in ways that don’t make a lot of sense.

FWIW, I have observed the same behavior using Google Maps on Android Auto. I haven't done any real road tripping but I use Google Maps a lot for traffic information and I tend to arrive at my destination within a percentage point of its estimate. YMMV.

A propos of nothing at all, this and related GOM mileage topics remind me of motorcycling across and up & down the USA back in the 1980s. Back then, motorcycle "range estimator" displays didn't exist, apart from a few laughable ones.

We all quickly learned to reset the odometer tripmeter at every fillup, and to religiously monitor the tripmeter for a pretty accurate range, as the gas tanks of those motorcycles weren't large and the gasoline full tank volume gave a surprisingly consistent mileage from fillup to fillup. At least, if I, er, we didn't try to replicate Bonneville speed records on our rides.

This makes me think that the recently added high voltage traction battery % indicator on the IPC kinda - sorta serves the same range estimation function on our Lightnings.
