Hands of the Frunk punk!
Sponsored
Keep the frunk. But I would like rear leaf springs like gas F150s have, so ride when empty would improve.I use my frunk on both my vehicles all the time. On my Model 3, it is the official food storage when doing takeout. Keeps the smells out of the car and if there's a spill, who cares? On my Lightning, any time I go shopping, I use it. Go to a few stores and have merchandise sitting in the truck all day? Without the frunk you were just a thief's target, not any more!
I was at an auto show yesterday checking out some of the EVs, and am amazed by the ones that don't have a frunk. Not sure if it's a popular opinion, but I love the look of the Ioniq, may be my favorite EV SUV on the market from a design standpoint. BUT! It doesn't have a frunk, so I would never buy it, frunks are too important when you don't have secure rear storage.
Final note on your range estimates, just to help a fellow forum member. I've been averaging 1.3-1.4 mi/kWh on my MY22 XLT SR (no heated seats). Charged to 90% (my daily charge), that's equals 115 miles on the lower 1.3 number. Unless your cold area isn't as cold as mine, you're overestimating your range substantially.
I'm pleased to hear that you're fond of your Lightning and appreciate its superior drive. Your worries about range, especially in colder conditions, are understandable. Your preference for the frunk over possible aerodynamic changes for extended range is intriguing. It appears the frunk's practicality is irreplaceable for you. Indeed, it's important not to sacrifice standout features for range alone. Your insights are valued, thanks for sharing!Have my first 10 days with my Lightning under my belt and starting to realize what I like and what I am not crazy about. The truck is hands down the best driving truck/SUV I have ever driven. Fast, smooth and just a pleasure to be in.
I could not afford the 10k for the extended range battery and have some anxiety over the stated 230 mile range. Really 203 if charging to 90% and then I live in a colder climate and cannot precondition. I have one charger and that stays plugged in to our Tesla at night, so the cold morning range is more like 193 when I get in it.
With that if Ford had designed the truck with a more aero front end I imagine you could see a significant range increase from lower drag coefficient. If you had a vote for 10 more miles of range and loosing the frunk as we know it or keep the current range and leave the frunk alone, what would it be?
For me it is easy. I say leave it the Frunk alone. I love that big old storage area. So perfect for a pick up. My wifes Y has a storage area in the front and we have never touched it. Not that important in an SUV and to small to bother with. The Frunk though is perfect height, size and works perfectly for the truck user. It also blows peoples minds while at shopping center. They can't believe what they are seeing.
Anyway love many things about the truck. Not crazy about the range but IMO Ford should never compromise on the wonderful Frunk.
Keep in mind that the aero benefit would only really be significant at higher speeds. It would add minimal range in urban/suburban driving.…
