Wasn't AOL the first email service ever? I know it was mine as I connected using a dialup modem..

My handle began life in the ~early~ days of AOL, blending Taxman for my work, Hog what a Harley-Davidson enthusiast might be associated with, also "Harley Owners group" and the stock market ticker symbol is HOG

One of the first, and connected to the Internet in 1993.

According to Wikipedia, “CompuServe was the first online service to offer Internet connectivity, albeit with limited access, as early as 1989, when it connected its proprietary e-mail service to allow incoming and outgoing messages to be exchanged with Internet-based e-mail addresses.”

I used to have a DELL at work, and from a meeting with name cards I cut the “WEN” from the card and taped it to my laptop so it read WENDELL.

Later I got a ‘younger model’, an hp. Like B177y I noticed that when you close the lid and lock at the hp laptop it says dy. So I took the WEN sticker and taped it in front of dy. WENdy

I says "taken for granite" she looked at me sternly and says EIGHT CHARACTERS MAX ... ever since I have been rockhead

When I was in the army, there were two of us named Rich on my small team, which had the number 025. And I was known as “Rich L” instead of just “Rich” (for my last name). We would stencil our team number after our names, on packing boxes & such. So I had “Rich L 025” stenciled on my stuff…

I used Prodigy in the late 1980's. Sears was a Prodigy partner and you purchased it at a Sears store. It had a very basic messaging function prior to email. I did bill payments on Prodigy via CheckFree, which had a text only interface. I don't recall if my first dial-up POTS access was 1200 or 2400 bpm, but I do recall the joy when I got a 9600 bpm Hayes modem for $400. Pages with graphics would load in 1 or 2 minutes versus sometimes 5 minutes or more ... unless someone picked up a telephone in the house and disconnected me.

LYTNING was the tag on my 2000 SVT Lightning, and I carried it over to my 2022 Lightning. The DMV allowed a maximum of 7 letters or numbers on a tag. On a road trip my family and I came up with a list of about 50 tag names. I had to go to a DMV office, request a tag name, and they checked their database to see if the name was available. LYTNING was my first choice.
