60 Amp install for FCSP at $1,500, or 80 amp at $2,200. Is it worth the extra $ ?

Wondering if I should settle for a 60amp installation of the FCSP to save some money, or bite the bullet and pay more for the full 80amps ?

the electrician thinks the 60amps will serve me fine.

He sort of thinks the 80amp is overkill for the truck and not worth the extra material and labor costs for him to do. But he’ll do whatever I want.

is it worth the extra money?

I have never regretting overbuilding. After spending $80K plus for an ER whats another $700?

But I would agree that most will never need to charge at 80amps at home.

What about "prepping" for future HIS install?

The FCSP at this point in time cannot meet its 80 amp claimed capability. So most run it at 64 amps. Otherwise it overheats.

If you need 0-100% charge every night, get the 80 amp and hope it works or Ford fixes the problem and replaces yours. For all normal uses just get the 60 and you'll be fine.

Having said all that, I opted for the 100 amp breaker and 80 amp charger, which I expect to run at 64 amps.

FYI - The Ford 80 Amp Charging Station is preset on switch position 7 for 80 amps. Other switch settings are 6 for 64 Amps, 5 for 48 Amps , 4 for 40 Amps. If you install on a 60 Amp line input than you will need to reset the switch to position 5 which will provide 48 Amps.

I wouldn't do it.

700 bucks to me is like a solid year or two of EV driving.

For me, I have a 60amp setup (48amp charger).

In my special EV rate window (6 hours, 12am-6am). I could gain 120 miles of range. I'm never going to need more than that on a day to day basis. If I need more suddenly, that's what DC charging is for.

If you need like 200 miles of charge range a night then go big.

I am happy with 32 amp charging. 3500 miles on F150. 27000 on maches.

(disclosure, in very 'fine' print: this is simply faster charging while your vehicle is parked at your home, it does NOT include the cost of the charging!)

The quote isn't specific enough to be able to tell if there is something else legitimate entering into the equation. Get another quote. How far is the run from your service panel?

I'll never 'need' 80A charging (100A circuit)...unless I get another EV...or the Super Off Peak rate window gets even narrower than the current five hours...or driving needs dramatically increase...or....

I did this calculation a while ago while trying to determine the same thing. I think you'd have to have a very small TOU rate window and a very big discount for that time period to make the bigger circuit worth it.

Here is the max you can put into the 131kwh ER truck in a 5 (10) hour window given different charge rates and a 91% charge efficiency (rounding differences show some numbers are not doubled for 10 hour windows):

16A = 13% (27%)
24A = 20% (40%)
32A = 27% (53%)
40A = 33% (67%)
48A = 40% (80%)
64A = 53% (full)
80A = 67% (full)

Also consider whether you'd ever have a second EVSE installed and whether you'd need a panel upgrade as a result of having such a big circuit installed now. Two smaller circuits may be a better option.

my CSP received firmware update charged 18-91% no errors. 80 degrees humid.

for perspective: i spent 950$ for materials - 150 ft run panel to charger. 100 amp circuit, conduit, & disconnect. and 60 ft of run is buried conduit.

Depending on where his main panel is, anything over 60a needs a separate disconnect within site of the charger. That could easily account for the $170.
