Sunrun said I only have a 100A breaker, so they recommend installing my charge station pro on the 50A breaker at 40A which would mean 15% to full in 15 hours vs the 8 hours if at 80A. What are people's thoughts? It would probably be another 5K to upgrade to a 200A so..., but thinking that is it worth it? how much will I be driving my card down to 10-15% everyday?

I would stick to 40A. If you can find a buyer for the Pro charger, get a 3rd party charger and use that.

I personally would not go to the expense. I have the Ford Pro installed and set to 80 amps, but donā€™t seem to every get but a 10KW draw. Thatā€™s like a 32amp equivalent and Iā€™m charging overnight regardless. Thatā€™s my 2cents worth.

Back to regularly scheduled programming.

How many miles do you drive every day? If itā€™s 100, you can go from 50 to 80% every night in about 5 hours, for example.

I would sell the CSP.

40A is plenty, but also consider an Emporia or Wallbox EVSE that can load balance if you want 48A without costly upgrades.

only you can answer that. I had the full 80a breaker for mine, but derated the FCSP to 48 as I've heard it's possible if the cables/unit get hot it could shut down for a while well it cools. But the 48amp charge times are fine with me so that's what I'm going with. 4 months, 2500 miles and it has worked just fine.

I would recommend upgrading to 200 A service. Eventually, you are going to have to anyway. The 100 A service will take a bite out your potential resale value for the property. If you are smart about it you might be able to get a third of the cost of the work (parts and labor) refunded as a tax rebate. The IRA has federal tax rebates for all kinds of electrification. It's worth looking into. Plus you get fast home charging as a perk.

with now over 37,000 miles, I use nothing but the good 'ol Ford Mobile 30amp charger at home. Does what it's supposed to. I have a lot more 'miles' than most so far... and I think most new EV owners stress too much over this 'needing' to have such high amperage on any regular basis. Use the basic charger and get to know how it works before spending one single dime on anything else.

The whole "charging to full" kind of throws the numbers off because it slows down a lot as it gets closer to 100%.

How much do you drive each day?

Even a modest 24A charger on a 30A dryer outlet will get you 100 miles (46kWh) in 8 hours. So you could charge from 55% to 90% each day easily (or 45% to 80%).

I installed the pro at my shop for the 80a on a 100a breaker

I went on fords website and bought the Mach e 48a charger and installed that at home.

the 48a Mach e charger is very good for what it is IMO. So maybe if you could get Sunrun to install 60a - then you could charge around 40 miles per hour at 48a.

I checked my status and mine has been charging for 1 hour and 12 minutes and I added 57 miles on the 48a charger, So if you think you have enough room for a 60a I am very happy with the 48a charger. Also , you probably know this but you can turn down your 80 amp to charge at 48 amp I believe.

I have fcsp on 50A at home and mobile charger on a 40A at the cabin. This covers me with plenty to spare. 20k miles on mine so far and have only needed outside chargers once while on a 4 hour road trip

I have my FCSP set to position '5' which is 48amps. My charge rate is usually 10kW. I rarely am below 25% when I get home when driving locally. So plug in at 30%, charge to 90% overnight. You'll only need to add 78.6 kW (131*.6), which you can do in 8 to 10 hours overnight.

The only advantage to going with the full 80A is if you need to charge ā€œquicklyā€ at home. 40A is totally fine, especially if you donā€™t drive more than ~150 miles a day. At 80A I can add about 45% in three hours, which isnā€™t really that fast but itā€™s a lot cheaper than DCFC.

I agree with another commenter about upgrading your service to 200A though. Youā€™ll need it once you get a second EV.

Yes. Even if your off-peak time of use window is restrictive like mine (midnight through 6am), meaning you might do a significant amount of charging at above-normal rates, it would take a really long time to break even on $5k. I would only spring for the panel upgrade if already needing to upgrade the electrical system for other uses such as adding a large solar array.
